The first Kanfurly Shield match of tlio season was played liore to-day in dull but fine weather, with an attendance of 13,000. South Canterbury won the toss, and, following Canterbury's kick-oil', several lineouts tuok place near half way. Page was penalised for lianging-on. Fairbrother tnissed with a kick at. goal. A Canterbury passing rush aroused enthusiasm, but Clie&ley dropped a pass. Then South pressed hard, and Priestley nearly scored. Aided by a strong wind, the South forwards broke through and the ball went to Scott, who was collared. Then Hay, Hart, 'Page and Fookes retaliated brilliantly. Fookes was thrown out at the corner.
