SAVAGES ENTERTAINED. COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS' WORK. The seating accommodation 01 the Scots Hall was taxed to its limit on Saturday evening 011 the occasion of the fortnightly irathcriifg of the Auckland Orphans' Club, at which the president (Dr. \V. H. Parkes). the secretary (Mr. T. T. Garland). past7.seeretary (Mr. F. J. Whittaker), and executive of the Auckland Savage Club were the guests oi' honour. The visitors also included Messrs. W. H. Prentis (chairman). J. A. Cahill (secretary). A. Thompson, and R. Glover-Clark I organisers) of the committee of commercial travellers which earlier in the day had carried out such a successful "drive"' on behalf of Auckland's poor and needy: the Mayor of Devonport (Mr. Ernest Aldridge), officials of the Railway Department, Messrs H. H. Sterling (General Manager), J. G. Rickerby (District Traffic Manager). J. K. Lowe (District Engineer), J. 1'". Mack Icy (Locomotive Engineer): and Mr. D. Meredith and six members of the Hamilton Orphans' Club.
Rangatira W. H. Parkes replied" on behalf of the older social club to the cordial welcome extended.
Mr. H. H. Sterling paid a tribute to the producers of the province, particularly in the Waikato. and to the large body o; railway servants. He was assured, and verily believed, that railway travelling in New Zealand made the visitor from Xew South Wales green with envy.
The chairman. Mr. E. Casey i vicepresident). referred to the excellent woi k performed in the cause of charity by the commercial travellers from time to time.
Mr. W. 11. Prentis conveyed the thank* of his colleagues to the people of Auckland for the wonderfully generous response to the appeal in aid oi the poor and needy.
Mr. Harold Baxter conducted the orcheetia. which rendered Schubert's "March Miiitaire"' and "Myddelton's "The Shamrock." Other items included songs by Messrs. A. E. Allen. Frank Sutherland, Braithwaite. Quill (Hamilton), and T. Searrell lot Kapakura). vocal, duets by Messrs. R. and E. Mannell: cornet duets by Mr. V. Hogg and Master I. Hogg; conjuring by Mr. Xoramn Tate; elocution by Mr. F. W. Barker, and humour by Mr. Dan Flood. The accompaniments were played by Mr. J. Sparling.
