GAMBLING IN BRITAIN.
Betting Bill As Government
Measure.
LEGALISING USE OF "TOTE."
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, July 13.
11l the House of Commons yesterday the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, referred to the intention to treat the Racecourse Betting Bill as a Government measure. He said one reason was that the measure would be of very considerable assistance to the Exchequer, and if passed it would make possible a remodelling of the betting taxes.
Many members also believed very firmly that it would have a very appreciable effect in helping to cleanse British racecourses. The bill proposes to legalise the use of the totalisator.
