HISTORY OF TOOTING.
At the time of the Dqmesday survey the Norman Abbey of Bee held the manors of Totinges (Tooting) and Estreham. (Streatham). Another proof of its age is that the 1246 Court Roll of Tooting, lodged in King's College, Cambridge, is the oldest in England. The district was once associated with a yeoman family, the Broadwaters, who used to be fined a shilling and a quart of ale for allowing their cattle to stray; and the manor of Tooting was once closely associated with Eton, who won the Battle of Water'oo. The origin of the name is obscure, but one authority, author of an old book on "Tooting Graveney," traces the origin of the name to the verb "to toot., thta is to look out, or peer) out."
