THE OLDEST COAL PIT.
The oldest colliery in Lancashire. pf»ssiblv the oldest in the country, has clos'ed through bad trade. It >; at Clifton, and is called the Net har.j Collier* - . To the last day it was capped with a pumping apparatu- di-ed jonjr ago by James Brindley and :t was the «ucces« of that pump which led the Duke of Bridge water to invite Brindley to build the Bridge water Canal. The owners say that the p!..n of the pump ia still the only efficient way of pumping that tbey know r,{. It is worked by a water-wheel, driven by water from a weir in the river above, carried through an underground channel to a wheel-hole in the colliery. The colliery was working for 187 years, and at one time employed over 700 men.
