SPECIAL RATING AREA.
OTAHUHU SCHEME
Owing to repeated requests from ratepayers on the Thomassen, Tolemache and Armstrong estates for formation of the dedicated but unformed roads, the Otahuhu Borough Council have decided that the only satisfactory method of dealing with the matter will be to declare such estates a special rating area, and, with the approval of the ratepayers, to raise a loan for the formation of the roads thereon. Estimates have been prepared showing that the i formation of all roads in the area to a width of 18ft and the construction of two tarred but not kerbed footpaths would cost £7038. If the work is dealt with as an unemployment scheme, it will carry a Government subsidy which, it is estimated, will amount to £2300. leaving the sum of £4738 to be raised by way of loan. The total general rate reeeived from this area is £157, which it is contended would be quite inadequate to meet all the requirements. To enable the council to decide whether there is a fair prospect of the proposal being acceptable to those concerned, an informal canvass will be made so as to obviate the risk of heavy cost involved in a doubtful poll. The wish of the ratepayers should be known by the 26th, inst.. and if in the affirmative the I necessary steps will be taken and a poll! M 4 ic tfc* mmi *m-
