REMOVE THE GAOL.
REGIONAL TOWN PLANNING.
REPRESENTATIONS TO
GOVERNMENT.
MR. E. H. POTTER'S VIEWS.
The Mount Eden Gaol, in the opinion of Mr. E. H. Potter, Mayor of Mount Eden, should be removed from its present site and accommodation for prisoners provided further afield, where the men could be put to farming and other outdoor occupations.
"In 7-egard to regional town planning," said Mr. Potter, "representations would bo made to the Government to remove the gaol. We are too far advanced to-day to perpetuate a system which has obtained for centuriesj of confining our prisoners in cramped surroundings in the centre of populous areas. It would be better for the prisoners and better for the citizens if this eyesore at Mount Eden is removed.
"The present site would be an ideal position for exhibition or show purposes. How fine it would be if the present Winter Exhibition were housed in suitable premises on the gaol site. The slopes of the mountain would make ideal residential sites, and a new approach to the mountain could be constructed."
