WINTER EXHIBITION.

SCHOOL CHILDREN'S OUTING. EAST COAST SPECIAL TRAIN. MANUFACTURING EXHIBITS' RECORD. There were large attendances at the Auckland Winter Exhibition yesterday and to-day. The takings yesterday amounted to £153—a decrease of £19 on last year's figures. The management explained this morning that the opening day's figures should not be taken as a guide to the future success of the show. The total takings last year were £3796.

From the time the exhibition opened this morning there was a constant stream of school children entering the portals.

This evening a special farmers' excursion train —the first from the Bay of Plenty—will arrive from Taneatua. Advance reports are to the effect that on its departure it was well supported, and arrangements have been made to have extra accommodation attached en route. The train is due at 7.19 p.m.

One of the most important happenings this morning was a Friesian cattle demonstration, and this was followed this afternoon by a Jersey cattle demonstration. Both the Friesian and Jersey breeders have pedigree animals stalled at the show for the first time on record.

A feature of this year's function is the exceptionally large' numbers of side shows. There are also the manufacturers' exhibits. These constitute a record for any show in the Dominion and go to prove that those concerned in secondary industries in the Auckland Province are living up to the high standard set elsewhere, more particularly at the Waikato .Winter Exhibition.

There are over 1000 entries in the Home Industries section, competitors coming from all parts of New Zealand. Generally speaking, the art classes compare very favourably with those of previous years. In this respect there is a noticeable increase in the commercial art classes, which are said to be of a particularly high standard. Photography, too, is well to the fore, there being o7 entries in the twelve classes. Some of the exhibits have come from southern districts of the Dominion.

This afternoon in the entertainment hall Government publicity pictures were shown, and these educational films will be screened again at 7 o'clock this evening. The Onehunga Citizens' Band will play selections outside the exhibition building, and at 8 o'clock a troupe of minstrels will perform in the entertainment hall. Schools' Competition Results. Although competition in the various schools' competitions is not so pronounced as in former years, still there is a good display. There was keen competition, however, in the letter-head design.
