ROTORUA BOROUGH COUNCIL

RESIGNATION OF MAYOR

A meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council took place last night, when the deputy-Mayor (Mr. J. N. McLean) presided.

Resignation of Mayor.—A letter wa« received from the Mayor (Mr. T. McDowell) regretting that, acting on medical advice, lie waa reluctantly compelled to resign hi# position. Members expressed deep regret at the communication, and at a special meeting held after the usual council meeting, the deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. N. McLean, was elected as Mayor and Mr. Jackson as deputy. Kaituna Valley.—A letter was received from the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce stating that they had sent letters to the Prime Minister and Ministers of Public Works, Agriculture and Forestry, asking the Government to make a survey of this valley, with a view to rail and road construction, and also the establishment of the wood-pulping industry generally. Suburban Drainage.—The Minister in charge Tourist" and Health Resort* wrote stating that, in view of the importance of this question, it would be necessary to have a report, together with estimates, prepared by the Public Works Engineer, and when same was procured tne_ matter could be gone into. ,tillage.—The Native Minister stated that he found no legal obstacles to the council acting as a health committee, and felt sure the Arawa Trust Board would render the council every assistance. slaughtering and Inspection Act.—The Minister of Labour advised that the remit from the borough council, which was unanimously adopted by the recent municipal _ conference, would have his consideration when amendments to the Act were under review. Removal of Drill Hall.—A letter was received from Col. H. R. Potter, remind-' ing the council that his Department could take no further action until it received a concrete proposal from the council.
