THE JUNIORS.

HOW THEY STAND. FIRST ROUND RESULTS. Results of games played in the first round of the Auckland Rugby Union's junior competitions, and the positions of the teams to date are as follow:—

CANTERBURY REP. TEAM.

(By Telegraph.—Press Assoclstiow) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. There are no surprises in the team to defend the Ranfury Shield for Canterbury. As a representative side it is probably the best of the players available, and it is expected to give genera! satisfaction. As an attacking machine the backs appear very sound. Canterbury has a powerful pack of hunters, and iii tTie scrummaging an improvement has lieen effected by a rearrangement, after the experience of the trail match.

WAIRARAPA EXTENDED.

MAXAWHEXUAS GOOD SHOWING. ■ | HOME TEAM'S HARD FIGHT. ——— s 'foipsrrn-ili— Press Association.) PALMERSTOX NORTH. Wednesday. In the presence "of approximately 4000 people the Manawhenua Rugby representatives were defeated by Wairarapa by 25 points to 20 to-day. Honours, except in the last quarter of an hour_ were even. Manawhenua exceeded expectations in running the Wairarapa combination so closely. At one stage of the match the home team 1M 20—15, and wai dominating play. But In the last quarter 6f an hour the game was lost. r Ini the final stages the Manawhenua players seemed t6 tire badly, while the elusive Wairar|ip*' backs showed up in a succession of dangerous pasting movements, which:, brought their'.score np from 13 to 25. With the score 25—20, ,M»nawhenua bad a. chance draw ahead: again when two penalties were given them, both within .good kicking range. The Manawhenua forwards had the better of matters In the loose, but had to give way to Wairarapa' to the tight. ,3oth sets of backs were patchy. Cooke, Stringfellow and Cundy were the stars of the Wairarapa rearguard. ;Ma*ing due allowance for Manawhenua*s lack of opportunity to achieve combination, their showing against a strong Wairarapa side was most promising and will raise hopes for their Southern tour.
