WELLINGTON R.C. TRENTHAM WINTER CARNIVAL POUIH'S STEEPLECHASE. TRENTHAM HURDLES TO GAZE. I'LAC.'K MINT TAKES MEMORIAL. OPEN SPRINT TO TABOO. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") W ELLTXGTON, Wednesdav. The Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting was opened to-day in line weather before a large attendance. The going was heavy. The totalisator n and led £48,079 10/, compared with £42,r>24 on the first day last year. The j Waikato-owner Pouri scored in the Wellington Steeplechase, in which only the placed hoixes fini.sed. The flat double went to Black Mint and Taboo. A Chapter of Accidents. All paraded for the Wellington Steeple*. Beau Cavalier (£ISB7), Kawini (£1400) and Tuki (£901) were the popular fancies. Beau Cavalier and Pouri were first to show out of the straight, then Ttiki and Passin' Through, , but Maunga toppled over at the first fence, while Comical lost his rider at tho second. Beau Cavalier led past tne .stands from Paesin' Through and Pouri (together), Tuki and Kawini. Coming down the straight the second time Beau Cavalier and Pouri were racing together, with Kawini, Passin' Through and Tuki next, but Beau Cavalier was outjumping Pouri, and it looked as if Pouri would come down if he continued to take on Beau Cavalier. Along the back Pouri ran up to Beau Cavalier again, and with the pace right on they went at the sod wall together, but, to the surprise or' everyone, Beau Cavalier fell. Pouri wa« then well clear of Kawini, Pas-in" Through and Tuki, the last-named coming down at the sod wall. This left three in the race, and Pouri went on to win easily by 150 yards from Kawini, who heat Passin' Through by 60 yards. Gaze Scores Easily. Revel was the only withdrawal from tno Trentham Hurdles. Gaze was favourite, being entrusted with £425 more than Brigadier Bill, while Mia Bella and Aberfeldy were next in demand. Star Shell led past the stands from Aberfeldy, Peneus, Mia Bella, Kauri Park, Brigadier Bill Panorama, Vexatious and Gaxe. Along the back Star Shell was attended by Brigadier Bill. Peneus, Kauri Park, Vexatious, Aberfeldy, Mia Bella, Kaikahu and Gaze. Brigadier Bill took charge across the top from Vexatious, Star Shell, Kauri Park and Aberfeldy. Brigadier Bill led into the straight from Vexatious, Mia Bella, Kauri Park and Aberfeldy, with aze handy. Once over the last fence (Ja/.e soon ran to the front, and beat Aberfeldy by a length and a half, with Kauri Park two lengths atfay third. Brigadier Bill was fourth; then came Mia Bella, Vexatious, Star Shell and Panorama. The Big Handicap. In the Whyte Memorial Nukumai (£1001), the bracket Black Mint and Royal Game (£843) and Royal Damon • (£781) were the best backed. Horomea was the early leader from Gardant, Cynthia N, Avro, Beaumont, Royal (lame and Black Mint. Horomea and Avro were in charge across the top from Gardant, Day Guard, Beaumont and Kilperon. The order was much the same into the straight, except that Nuclei* had come into the picture, and Nukumai and Black Mint liad their positions. In the run to the judge a great finish resulted in Black Mint scoring, by a head, from Nukumai, with Day Guard two lengths away third. Bisox, Avro, Beaumont, Royal Mint, The Swell, Nucleus and Shining Armourwere next. A Good Dividend. The programme concluded with the Te Aro Handicap, for which eighteen went to tho post. Pangolin (£1140) carried most money, while The Mug (late Tanekaha) and Carinthia had good support. Carinthia was quickly in front, and led along the back from Freeze Out, Rory Mor, Otairi, Momogne, and Pangolin. Freeze Out had taken charge before the top was reached, attended by Otairi, Monsogne, Carinthia, Pangolin and King Mart. This order was maintained into the straight, and Freeze Out was never afterwards headed, holding his own to win by a neck from Pangolin, who beat Carinthia by four lengths. Rory Mor, Teri, King Mart, Majoram, Billion and Kalos were next. VITTORIA HURDLES, of 270 sots. One mile and three-quarters. 4 —SAN PEDRO, br g, aged, by Rangitero—Santa Monna (Mr. S. J.
