WHAT HAPPENED?
THE ARAPUNI DISPUTE.
LABOUR MEMBER'S COMMENT " COVERING UP THE TRACK." (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. "What happened at Arapuni?" asked Mr. H. G. R. Mason as one of his final points in an Address-in-Reply speech it. the House of Representatives this afternoon.
He pointed out that no explanation had been made by the Government, but it waited eighteen months after it was known there was a dispute with the contractors, and then settled it, all points being in favour of the contractors, so far as the public could see.
What the country was curious about was the point that, if it was wise to make a settlement 18 months after the dispute started, why was it not made at the beginning? Immense inconvenience and loss to Auckland province could have been avoided.
"Surely a remarkable thing, considering that we voted for the 'Man Who Gets Things Done'," added Mr. Mason
"If the Government made a mistake, it need not be alarmed about confessing it without wasting 18 months to cover up the track —if a mistake was made."
