GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

POTATOES LOWER IN PRICE

MAIZE CHEAPER IN WAIKATO

The chief feature of the local grain and produce market is a definite easing in potatoes values consequent upon unexpectedly large supplies coming to hand from the South by the Waitomo. A week ago, with spot stocks light, merchants vere getting up to £9 10/ per ton, ex :tore; to-day the current, rate is from £8 15/ to £9. Southern quotations are lown 2/6 a ton for July delivery, and ex>orters are not prepared to make forward :ontraets. There is a small demand for seed potaoes in the varieties favoured for early Wanting, but it will be some time yet >efore main planting sorts will be equired. Onions. The onion market, too, is easier followng upon the receipt of Southern supplies. Sowever, the quality is mixed, and by ;he time waste and other charges are illowed for merchants cannot sell profitibly under about 16/ per cwt. The first Japanese are expected at the beginning of Vugust. Oats and Chaff. The oats market is inclined to weakless, but there is no change in quotalions. Local merchants are content to purchase from hand to mouth, consump:ion, being much lees than wa« the case l few years back before motor traction jeeame popular. Chaff values are unchanged and there « a fair demand for really good quality >n the basis of £9 10/ per ton, ex store. Blenheim merchants are not keen to quote, itating that they can dispose of all available from Marlborough to more adjacent Tiarkets. Auckland supplies, therefore, ire coming chiefly from Canterbury. Several lines of inferior quality have been sent forward to this port on consignment md have sold at lower than current luotatione. Maize. The maize market is definitely weaker in consequence of small quantities of the iew season's crop being offered. A disturbing factor, also, is found in the Facilities provided by the latest extension in the Bay of Plenty railways. maize bought in the Bay of Plenty at "> 3 on trucks has been sold in Hamilton it t> °*. ""t '"tiuh a.Wove the cost of finding at Auckland. For maize sent to the Waikato Bay of Plenty growers will have a big advantage over the Gisborne grower, but where the grain is 6cnt to this port, the position is reversed. Bay of Plentymaize costs 2/3 a sack to 1 nd at Auckland, as against 1/6 in the case of Gisborne consignments. Under the circumstances it will be some time before values will settle down to a stable basis. Wheat. There 16 no change to record in the wheat market. Supplies come to hand regularly, there are ample in stock and merchants are selling ex score at from 7/7 to 7/8 per bushel, with an occasional deal going through at 7/6. Bran and Pollard. Bran is slightly more plentiful, but pollard is still scarce, with no alteration in values. Wholesale Current Prices. Sharps and Bran.—Mill prices: Sharps, £9 10/ per ton; bran, £8 per ton. Merchants' quotations, ex store: Pollard, £10 10, ; bran, £8 10/; oats, feed, B Gartons, 4/9, 4/10; A Gartons, 5 2 bushel, clipped Dunns, 5/6; clipped Gartons, 5/6; seed Algerians, 6'; fowl wheat, 7/7 to 7/8 per bushel; maize, old season, 6/10, ex store; barley, feed, 5/9 per bushel; Cape barley, seed, 7/6 per bushel; maize meal, 14/6 per lOOlb; barley meal, l.'V per 1001b.
