WINTER RACING.

MEETING AT TRENTHAM.

STEEPLES AND HUftDLES. PROGRAMME FOR THE OPENING DAY. THE FIELDS REVIEWED. The winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will open at Trentham tomorrow. Good fields are engaged, with the exception of the steeplechase, in which it is expected that only seven will go to the post. The course is sure to be very heavy. The Opening Event. The first event, the Vittoria Hurdle Ruce, has drawn a field of twelve. Atereria is top weight with 10.10, and even with this impost ho is sure to go well He has only had two starts over hurdlesand finished second to Patuki in the Apley Hurdle Race, one mile and ahalf, at tho Hawke's Bay Hunt Club meeting recently. In his next effort, with 10.5, he won the Whakatu Hurdles, 1 ono mile and three-quarters, at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting, Patuki (9.13) being second. San Pedro finished third in the Second TWly . Hurdles, ono mile and a-half, at Marton last January, and was second to Kilburn in the Pouroutwhao Hack Hurdles, one mile and five furlongs, at the Foxton annual meeting, but won a similar event the next day. His best effort since then was in finishing third to Sir Moment and R§d Bank at the Otaki meeting last month. Sir Moment has only been raced over hurdles twice—at ■ the Otaki meeting—and won on each occasion. He will be in request. Panorama won a double over hurdles at the last Woodville fixture, and since then wa» placed in two hurdle events at the Feilcling meeting, and was second to Polyphemus over a mile and a-half at the Marlborough meeting, held at Trenthani. Troilus showed at the recent Hawke's Bay meeting that, he would Boon be at his best, being third in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles to Gaze and Ballyfarnon and second in the Turamoe Hurdles, one mile and a-half, to Peneus. He should be a better horse at Trentham. Patuki beat Atereria at the Havkrt Bay Hunt Club meeting, but Atereria reversed the positions at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting. '< However, Patuki is now in receipt of 151b now against 61b when they last met, and, therefore, should run well. Homt won at the Napier Park meeting in his first start, but was beaten at Hawke's Bay. He will be coupled with Atereria. Of the others, Braeman and Olympic, who was placed in two hurdle events at the last Feilding meeting, may be the best. The public may lend most support to TROILUS SIR MOMENT ATERERIA. The Trial Plate. The Trial Plate is for horses that have never won a race of the value of lOOsovs, and is run under special weights. Historic has been placed in a couple of races this season, the last being a second in the Wallaceville Highweight Handicap, one mile, at the Wellington summer meeffng. He has not raced sinos then. Battle Torque has yet to prove herself. Gold Cure failed to get into the money in his two starts, but Rameses finished second in a six-furlong event at the Nelson meeting and won over a similar distance the next day. Le Champ was second to Segment in a five-furlong event at the Egmont meeting and was second to Essential over seven furlongs at the Napier winter meeting. Mark Mint has performed well recently. At the meeting he finished second in the Maiden Stakes, six furlongs, at Nelson won a six-furlong and a fivefurlong event, and finished second to Freezeout over seven furlongs. His next start was at the Otaki meeting last month and he annexed the Waitohi Handicap, six furlongs, from a good field. Solgele has won two five-furlong races and been placed in a six-furlong event. Consent was second to High Disdain in the Fitzherbert Handicap, five furlongs, . at the Wellington summer meeting, and was third to Goblin Market and Concentrate in the Nursery Handicap, six furlongs, at the same meeting. At the recent Otaki meeting he won the Kuku Maiden Hack Race, six furlongs, and therefore has raced consistently in his' four starts. Dancing Star was second in a six-furlong event at Nelson and was runner-up to Just So at Otaki L "j k ? Light is one of S - Waddell's team and has yet to show what she can do. Roscrea has only had one race and that was at Ashburton recently, when he won ? T ver , furlongs. Tea Rose won the Novice Stakes, five furlongs, while Tripos and Toxeuma may be the best of the others. Probably the best backed will be ROSCREA CONSENT MARK MINT. The Hack Steeples. • ' 8 the top of those engaged in the Hack Steeplechase and recently he has shown good form, winning the Petane Hack Steeplechase, two miles, at the Napier Park meeting, and finishing second to Rangi Sarto in the Woodlands Steeplechase, two miles, at the Hawke's Bay winter meeting. Matu was third in the Woodlands Steeplechase and won the June Steeplechase at the latter fixture. San Fera has not pleased recently, and Oriflamb has nothing to commend him of late. Jovial performed well at the recent Dunedin winter meeting. Captain Sarto, who won the Hunters' Steeplechase at Dunedin, and Mainspring, who annexed the Dromore Steeplechase at Ashburton, may be preferred of the others engaged. Most money, may be invested on MATU RADIATE . _ JOVIAL The Sprint Event. \ King Lu has pride of place in the Stewards' Handicap, the sprint event'of the day, and after his performance in winning at the Te Kuiti meeting with 11.0 he should be hard to. dispose of with lib less at Trentham to-morrow. He lias raced well on this course at the last two winter meetings, and there is no doubt that he is a very fit horse at present. has been scratched since the acceptances were posted. Taboo won seven furlongs at the last South -ting and. annexed the s Handicap, six furlongs, at

the last Dunedin meeting, beating a eood field. Duke Abbey finished third in the I rince of Wales' Handicap, nine furlongs, and occupied a similar position in the »u° n vv st Handica P> seven furlongs, at the Manawatu autumn meeting. He was also third at Otaki, which are his last three performances. Oration showed promising form at the Auckland winter meeting, being second to Kingfield in the open six on the first day and occupying a similar position to Ohinemuri in the King George Handicap, seven furlongs, on the second day. If in the same -form he will be hard to dispose of. Monaghan scored over six furlongs at the Otaki meeting, while Bonogne won the Flying Handicap at Egmont, and is a useful sort in the soft going. Catkin is reported to be in great fettlo and should run well, while Waltzer, who ran well at Ellerslie recently, and Ballymoy 11. may be the best of those lower down. The favourite division may be KING LU-WALTZER t)UKE ABBEY - BONOGNE The Wellington Steeplechase. Beau Cavalier won the WellingtonSteeplechase with 10.7 last season, and since then has annexed the Grand National Steeplechase with 141b more and scored in the Great Northern Hurdles, besides winning a minor hurdle race and two events on the flat. He is in great fettle at present and will take some beating. Tuki was second to Glendo wie in the Great Northern Steeplechase and fourth in this event last year, and is sure to go well. Comical is gaining more confidence and has been schooling well at Trentham. Kawini was second in the Wellington Steeples last July, and after running second in the Winter Steeples at Ellerslie recently can be looked upon to run a great race. Maunga did not please at Wanganui, Ellerslie, or Hawke's Bay, but Pouri showed promise by running second at Ellerslie at the To Kuiti meeting and winning on the second day. The beat supported may be KAWINI BEAU CAVALIER TUKI The Trentham Hurdles. A dozen are carded for the Trentham Hurdles. Brigadier Bill is a very useful sort in this department, but his efforts recently have been confined to

the big cauntry. - Aberfeldy has won over hurdles on the Trentham course, but he fell in two of his three outings at the last Great Northern running second to Red Fuchsia on the other occasion. If he stands up he is likely to be in the money. Gaze won the Hawke's Bay Hurdles with 10.12 so easily that he will have friends for this event, seeing he has 101b off his back. He can jump well and has plenty of pace. Peneus won at the Great Northern meet-\ ing and subsequently scored in the Turamoe Hurdles at the Hawke's Bay meeting with 11.5. Mia Bella was second in the Great Northern Hurdles and on that showing is sure to run well. Kaikahu has not been quite right lately, while of the' others Kauri Park and Revel may befmost sought after. The bulk of the Investments may perhaps be entrusted to GAZE MIA BELLA KAURI PARK. A Big Yield. The biggest field of the day 4hei Whyte Memorial, there being 29 engaged. Paitonu has shown good form up to nine furlongs this season and is sure to go well. King Lu, if started in this event, will be in demand. Nukumai created a surprise by winning the Whyte Memorial last seasion, but he has nothing to commend him recently. Black Mint won two events at Dune'd:n and will be well suited by the conditions, and will be coupled with Royal Game, who ran third to him in the King George Handicap at Wingatui. Royal Damon has shown ability up to a mile and aquarter, though' he has been more successful in sprint events; Taboo is engaged in the Steward's Handicap earlier in the day. Shining Armour has no form to commend him recently, but Day Guard, after his running here, will have to be reckoned with. Queen Arch won i the Cornwall Handicap and the Te Kuiti ! Handicap and will be coupled with King Lu if they both start. She ran second in this event last year. Of those lower down Huikai, who showed good form at Hawke's Bay, 'Fairy Herald, who won the Winter Oats at . Dunedin, and has scored on this course previously, Horopieft, Neucleus, Te Koroke, Avro and Gold Mint may appeal most. When the final! figures are adjusted probably the best fanned 1 iyin be' . : BLACK MINT DAY GUARD • QUEEN ARCH. The Te Aro Handicap. There is ahother large field engaged in the Te Aro Handicap, the concluding event of the day. Ten is a good sort, but has not raced for some time. Kalosracedwell last winter, but has only had' two starts recently. Otairi has only been saddled up twice this season ,but scored in his last effort. King Mart won a seven furlong event at Otaki and a mil? and a furlong; Hawke's JJay. Catfnthia scored ove^' six furlongs at' Dunedin, While of the others Meadow Lark, who who won at Ashburton, Freezeout and performed similarly at Wingatui, Deepot, Monsogne may have some friends. The public my most fancy KING MART. CARINTHIA OTAIRI

to recover for the racing, even given the most favourable corditions. Beau Cavalier, all going well, can be regarded as a certain starter in the Steeplechase, whatever may be his prospects subsequently j n the Winter Hurdles. He is so well at present th;.t he must be highly regarded in his attempt to win for the second time in succession. The Babe went wrong on the eve of departure from Trenrtham, and he will not be a starter in the Wellington Steeplechase. This reduces the field to seven, and Tuki is now the only South Island representative. The Babe was not brought up, and was scratched for all engagements at 9 a.m. to-day. G. Jones arrived at Trentham to-day with Atareria and Chelone. Atareria will be ridden in the Vittoria Hack Hurdles by H. Gordon, and on his recent work should go well, but is not too reliable. Chelone has been scratched for his opening day's engagement in the Te Aro Hack, but will run on the second and third days. He has gone on the right way since winning at Otaki last month. Scratchings for all engagements at the Wellington winter meeting are Mangani, Son o' Mine, Fee Simple, Wanderlust and Lucre. Roscrea is a splendid looking gelding, resembling Limerick very much, but a comparison of the half-brothers at the same age is greatly in favour of, Roscrea. He hit out well in his easy task yesterday morning, and no* matter how he fares this week at Trentham there appears a good future in store for him. Queen Arch will be ridden in the Whyte Memorial by A. Tinker. R. Reed has accepted the ride on Beaumont in the Whyte Memorial. King Lu claims a double engagement to-morrow, in the Stewards' Handicap and the Whyte Memorial. It is Mr. Hines' intention to start both King Lu and Waltzer in the sprint event, and the bracket is sure of solid support. A lot of good judges from Auckland expect that Waltzer at the weights will prove the better of the pair. King Lu had a fine record at Trentham in July, and his present condition augurs well for his third year. T. Metcalf will ride Rameses in the Trial Plate, and Volplane in the Te Aro Handicap to-morrow. Aberfeldy did not jump this morning, but put in some solid work on the trial grass. Town Bank did not come north with Tuki and Fairy Herald, and was scratched for the Whyte Memorial at 3.45 p.m. H. Nurse left Lancer at home, and the Greyspear gelding will not fulfil his engagements at the Wellington meeting.
