SALVATION ARMY.
FAREWELLING A COMMANDER. Lieut.-Colonel J. J. Toomer, commander of the Auckland Division of the Salvation Army, who is relinquishing the position after four years' service to take up Army work at headquarters in Wellington, was accorded, with Mrs. Toomer, au enthusiastic farewell at the Albert Street barracks last evening. The function was preceded by a street procession, about 300 people taking part, the bands of the Eden, Newton and City corps each heading a section. The barracks were crowded. The divisional secretary, Major A. Miles, congratulated Colonel Toomer on the valuable work he had done in Auckland, and wished him success in his new sphere. Colonel Toomer presented long service badges to Bandmaster Leighton, Newton, Sergeant-Major Foster, Devon port, and to Bandmaster Dobey, of the City Silver Band, each for 25 years' service with the Army. Later the division gathered at the Newton Hall, where Colonel Toomer was presented with an illuminated address. The new divisional superintendent is Brigadier Cottrill, of South Africa.
