Following a fine night and morning, rain commenced to fall shortly before the first race was .timed to start at Alexandra Park, Epsom, for the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting. The track was heavy, after a cold and rainy week. The attendance was quite satisfactory in the circumstances.
