SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A large and most enjoyable bridge party was held by the House Committee of the Lyceum Club on Monday evening. The lounge was beautifully arranged with masses of flowers and greenery. The prize-winners for the evening were Mrs. Duncan Clerk, Mrs. Devore and Mr. Rogerson.

The first of a series of bridge evenings to be held during the winter months was held in the Gas Company's rooms, Takapuna, last evening. These parties are held in connection with the Pupuke Golf and the Takapuna Tennis Clubs combined, each club to benefit equally, and they promise to be most successful. The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Williamson) represented the Tennis Club as host and hostess, and the president (Mr. Mingay), with Mrs. Mingay, as host and hostess for the Golf Club. There were 88 players. The highest score by a lady was made by Miss Berry, and the best men's score by Mr. F. Kneebone. The winners of the hidden numbers were Mrs. Craven and Mr. H. R. Parker. Mr. E. E. Grimwade welcomed the visitors.

A meeting of the Query Club was held yesterday afternoon, when Miss J. Tapper presided over a good attendance of members. The balance-sheet of the recent charity dance, given by the club, was presented, and showed a substantial surplus. Donations were made to the Hospital Auxiliary Fund and to the City Mission. Last winter the Query girls provided fuel for many deserving cases among the aged poor in Jhe city, and as this help was so greatly appreciated by the recipients it was decided to again allot a portion of the club's funds for this purpose. Final arrangements "were made in connection with the stall to be taken by the members at the City Mission Fair next month.

A successful bridge party was held by the members of the Mutual Club on Monday evening. Very pretty Chinese lanterns and tall stands of purple irises, with autumn foliage, made for effective decorations. Mrs. Von Sturmer received the gueats in a black chiffon gown bordered with fur. A reception was given to Miss Maude Royden, the English lecturer, at a largely-attended meeting of the Lyceum Club, Hamilton, yesterday afternoon. Miss Royden said the women in England regarded the people of New Zealand with wonder. Their pioneering efforts in the sphere of women's franchise were held up as an ideal. She was particularly interested in the work that was being done to reduce infantile and maternal mortality in New Zealand. She hoped to do something in England on the lines of establishing a system of caring for children and expectant mothers.

Winter having set in, bridge afternoons seem to have as great a vogue as ever. Mrs. H. McCoy's party on Monday was most successful. Large bowls of pink and red dahlias were placed in the drawing and smoking rooms, the tea table being effectively decorated in mauve irises and pale yellow dahlias. The hostess wore a frock of larkspur blue crepe de chine, worked in shaded pink beads. Among the guests were: Mrs. Eliot Davis, Mrs. Alderton, Mrs. Foster, Mrs. P. Hermau, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Hyams, Mrs. Tattley, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. D. Scott, Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. C. Phillips.
