OVERSEAS MARKETS.

LONDON WOOL SALES.

(Received 10.30 a.m.)

LONDON, May 22.

The wool sales closed on a slightly higher basis than at opening. The catalogue totalled 100,iJ4. It is estimated that the quantity sold to the Home trade was 17,000 bales, to the Continent about 49,500 bales, and to America 1000, and held over 33.000 bales. Competition was keen and general throughout. Continentals bought largely of Merinos. The Home trade was active in crorwbreds and elipes. Thanks to a strong competition amongst German, Swiss and Alsatian spinners, prices of fine Merinos were well maintained. Broader sorts, suitable for t<i|>iiialvinir, were also very firm. Faulty carbonising sorts hardened as tbe sales progressed. Except scoureds, which were still nbi'iit five cent below March, crossbreds finest partly recovered the opening decline. Medium and lower grades have been in sellers' favour. Slipes did not maintain the abnorma 1 Ma rch rates and were generally a Id to IVfcd cheaper. Medium and lower grades were in strong demand at unchanged priccs. Lamlifi and Merinnx were irregular, with rhoice parcels firm and others generally from par to five per cent below March. Crossbreds were firm and unchanged, New Zealand's N/M, 17d; JIRTT, 17d.
