TROTTING.

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

(By ORION.)

FIXTURES. Jon* 2, 4.—Canterbury Park T.C. June 9.—Achburton T.C. June 28. 27.—Auckland T.C.

Forfeits for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes fall due to-day. Horses left in after that date become liable for the full subscription of lOsovs.

W. Clifton will have Dad's Hope ami Halgana racing at the Hawke's Bay meeting. The pair are in good condition, but they do not look betting propositions.

The Globe Derby gelding Planet has been one of the most disappointing paeers ever brought over from Australia. He has failed to race up to the reputation which was responsible for his purchase, but may yet do something to redeem his lost record.

Those who saw Haerenga Pai unluckily beaten at Te Aroha will not want much encouragement to support the daughter of Happy Voyage and Wee Enid if she is stepped out in the East Coast Handicap at Hawke's Bay. She is 12yds behind in a 4.50 class, and should have no difficulty in knocking something off her handicap.

Akenehi, who was in the boom for the Cambridge meeting but did not fulfil his engagement, is among those on the limit in the Havelock Handicap at Hawke's Bay. If Akenehi is anywhere near as good as reported he should have no difficulty in getting the money. Still he has never yet started in a race, and he may let his admirers down when it comes to real business.

Nominations for the 1930 Melbourne Trotting Derby of lOOOsovs, Australia's classic race for three-year-old trotters and pacers, close on Tuesday, June 5, next. The race is over a mile, and his run in divisions; one for pacers, one for trotters. The same body, the Victorian Trotting and Racing Association, is calling for entries for the Trotting Thousand, one mile and a-half, trotters or pacers, for horses with a winning record of 2.25 at and on October 29, 1928.

At the last meeting of the Petone Borough Council a letter was received from the Hutt Park Committee in connection with the suggested lease to the Trotting Club, forwarding a report of the proceedings of a conference between the Mayors of Lower Hutt, Eastbourne and Petone, who met with the president of the Trotting Club recently to discuss a comprehensive scheme for improving the facilities for the public. The council agreed with the suggestion of the committee that the Trotting Club be granted another twenty-one years' lease at the expiration of the present one.

The useful Lord Haldane is to fulfil engagements at Hastings. This pacer is one of the solid sort who does nothing wrong, and is always worth a trifle when he steps out in a race.

Regret showed a lot of pace at Cambridge, hut going to a tangle settled the prospects of the son of Wild Cry. If he could be induced to go solid all the way he would have a royal chance in the Clive Handicap at Hawke's Bay.

A couple of seasons ago, Jasper, trained by B. Edwards, threatened to make a useful pacer, but so far he has failed to live up to expectations. He has not done a great deal of racing, and there is plenty of time yet for him to make good. He is engaged at the Hawke's Bay meeting.

After his erratic display at the Cambridge meeting, where he failed to leave the mark right, Carwood is not likely to be greatly favoured by backers at the Hawke's Bay meeting. There is no question about Carwood being able to trot well, but it is not much use to him unless he becomes better mannered.

STUD FEES IN AMERICA. Five stallions arc at present in service at the famous Walnut Stud Farm. Guy Axworthy (2.8|) reigns supreme, and his fee is 2000 dollars. As he is the sire of tiee Axworthy 1.58J, McElwyn, 1.59J, Guy McKinney 1.58f and Arion Guy 1.59J, his list soon filled. In the same stud the fees of the other stallions range from 100 dollars to 300 dollars. Dillon Axworthy holds pride of place at the Hanover Shoe Farms, the proprietors of which own Peter Manning, the worldfamous trotting gelding. Dillon Axworthy's fee is 500 dollars and Guy McKinney 1.58f (in the same stud), 200 dollars. Altantic Express 2.7| (sire of Nedda 1.585, the "trotting queen") stands at 200 dollars. Belwin's fee is 300 dollars, Trampfast 50 dollars, Pluto Watts, Napoleon Direct and Arion Guy 100 dollars. Mr. McElwyn, The Great Volo and Abbedale (by The Abbe, sire of Bert Abbe), 200 dollars. TIN HARES AND TROTTING. In England the London Trotting Club combines greyhound racing with its horse events. In the meeting under review four races were allotted to horses and the same number to dogs. Two of the trotting events consisted of finals held over from the previous meeting, when the heats had been decided. One of these races was called the Novice Drivers' Cup, the winner of which received a silver cup and £7. The heat winners (2) received £3 each, and the second and third in the final £2 and £1 respectively. Another race was the final of the March Handicap, the three heats of which had also been decided at the previous meeting. Heat winners received £6 each, and the winner of the final £20, second £5 and third £2. The limit was "about" a 2.25 mark, and the distance "about" one mile. One heat was run at a 2.26 gait, but the winner of the final took 2.275. The two straightout races each attracted 10 starters, the first prizes of which were £9 and £10.
