SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A very enjoyable party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Ruck at their residence, Vincent Avenue, Remuera, on the occasion of their son Cecil's twenty-first birthday. Competitions and dancing made the evening a gay one.

The monthly meeting of the Greenhithe Women's Institute was held on Thursday. There was a good, attendance, and after the business had been gone through, the members devoted themselves to basket making, and the -afternoon concluded with a roll call and an exchange of useful hints and recipes.

Mrs. Alexander MacKenzie, of Kohimarama, was hostess at a very enjoyable afternoon tea held' in the Tudor Tearooms on Wednesday last, in honour of Miss CShae, of Wellington. The table was very artistically arranged with autumn flowers. Other guests were Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Blackett, Miss Beryl Heap, Miss Molly CShae.

Mrs. C. W. Turner, of Matamata, and late of Taumarunui, was the guest of honoUr at a delightful evening given by Mrs. G. E. Manson at her home, Taumarunui, last Thursday evening. A large number of Mrs. Turner's friends were present and the evening was passed pleasantly with competitions and music. The winners of the competitions were Mrs. Seddon Hills and Mrs. Jones. Miss Joan Turner delighted her hearers with an amusing' recitation, and Miss Bullions contributed a charming pianoforii solo.

The decorations at the Charity Ball last evening, held at Scbts Hall, were multi-coloured paper streamers in the vestibule. The Retail Association are very lucky in having two enthusiastic organisers—Miss Lena Purcell (hon. secretary) and Mies M. Steinmetz (assistant secretary). Many pretty evening gowns of the latest fashions were worn by the large number of ladies who attended.

The Beresford Congregational Church choir held a most enjoyable social evening on Saturday. Under the capable supervision of Mr. Blomfield some excellent competitions were keenly contested, the prize winners being Mrs. Martin, Mrs. 6. Spicer, Miss Gossling, Messrs. Miller, Saunders, and Gemmell. Vocal numbers were pleasingly rendered by Mrs. Lewis Eady, Mrs. Martin, Wing, Gordon, McCardelL The Misses Pilkington were applauded for their recitations.

A delightful dinner and cabaret party was given to Miss Madeline Gorton by a number of her friends prior to her departure for South Africa at the end of the week. Miss Gorton wore a frock of gold lace, over emerald green; Miss Rona Rainger was in apple green georgette, with silver trimming; MiBS Myra Emanuel, black ring velvet with diamante trimming; Miss Freda Gaudin, white satin appliqued in apple green and silver; Miss Joyce Dewing, leaf green georgette, and Miss Olga Sturt, black taffeta frock.

An effort to form a Surf and Life Saving Club for Takapuna Beach is being made, and a dance to further that object was held in the Gaiety Theatre on Monday evening. The Foresters, who had a prior right to the hall for that date, withdrew their claim, and the Foresters Ladies' Committee joined forces with the Surf Club Committee in providing and arranging the supper. A voluntary orchestra provided excellent music. Amongst the dancers were: Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Ramsay, Mrs. Salmon, Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Burgess, Mrs; Harrison, Mrs. Fisher, . Miss Selby-Tuppen gave a small but cheery dinner and bridge party on Saturday evening prior to her returning to London by the Orsova, via Australia. The lounge and dining room of Arundel were profusely decorated in pink and white cosmos, early jonquils, and maiden hair fern. The hostess received her guests in a gown of flame coloured georgette and taffeta, made on early period lines. Among the guests were Commander-Engineer Smith and Mrs. Smith, the latter in a black lace gown; Paymaster Lieutenant Parrott and Airs. Parrott, in rose pink taffeta; Mr. and Mrs. D. Watson, blush pink chiffon and taffeta; Miss W. Averill, petunia taffeta; Miss ■ Betty Roberts, primrose taffeta; Dr. Bevin Brown, Mr. Strahan Harris, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Cole.

Mrs. Homersham, sen., of Aukopae, in Wanganui River Valley, left on Saturday morning for Rotorua where she will reside in future. Prior to her departure from the district in which she has been a popular figure during recent years, Mrs. Homersham was entertained at a farewell afternoon tea at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. White, Otunui. A presentation, in the form of a beautiful toilet set, was made to the guest of honour as a token of her many friends' appreciation of her good qualities and of their good wishes for her future happiness. Before leaving the district Mrs. Homersham spent a day as the guest of Mrs. A. G. Kenderdine, Taumarunui, at whose home a few of Mrs. Homersham's Taumarunui friends were privileged to farewell her at afternoon tea.

A large and very jolly morning tea party was given by Miss Lorna Reyburn at the Tudor Tearooms on Saturday prior to her departure for England. The table was beautifully arrayed in masses of autumn flowers. Many dainty gowns were worn on Saturday evening at the dance" held by Miss Spencer, of Symonds Street. The latest music was supplied by Mr. Jack Rowe and his orchestra.
