GARAGE BURNED.
SIX CARS DESTROYED.
SUDDEN, FURIOUS BLAZE.
FIRE BRIGADE POWERLESS.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
WHAKATANE, this day.
the old Royal Mail stables, at the eorner of Wairere and Toroa Streets, which were converted into a garage by the Royal Mail Transport Company, vere completely destroyed by fire at 5.15 last evening. Heaps of old tyres and tins of benzine made a spectacular blaze, which the brigade had no chance of extinguishing, especially as the walls were wooden. Six motor cars were burned. They were owned, respectively by the Royal Mail Transport Company, Sargood, Son and Ewen, Ltd., the Government, Mr. E. W. Beckett, Mr. G. Pesgram and Messrs. W. R. Sloane and J. Ruddy. The company's car had just been overhauled and enlarged. The fire started so suddenly and furiously that the caretaker, who lost all his effects, was unable to save any of the cars. Mr. Beckett's car was insured for £60 and Sargood, Son and Ewen's for £350, both in the South British Office. The Royal Mail car also was insured.
