WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUEL PUWHERO'S STEEPLES. CENTURY HURDLES TO RED FUCHSIA. PAITONU AND MOA BIKD FLAT DOUBLE. (Bj Telegraph—Special to "Star. - ) WANGANUI, Saturday. The winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club concluded to-day in beautiful weather before a good attendance, and the course was in splendid order. Red Fuchsia won the Century Hurdles, after a close finish with Perle De Leon. The latter made one or two bad jumps, otherwise he might have been harder to beat. The Grandstand Steeples went to Fuwhero, who led practically all the way. Paitonu, who was nearly caught napping by Day Guard, took the principal flat race. Peter Maxwell broke down after negotiating the last fence in the Grandstand Steeples. During the day the sum of £27,491 10/ was put through the machine, compared with £20,108 for the corresponding day last year. This made a total for the meeting of £49,705, against £52,488 10/, a decrease of £2693 10/. A Close Finish.

Troflus was the only defection from the Century . Hurdles, leaving a field of eight. Aberfeldy was favourite, being entrusted with £17 nore than Pouri, with Red Fuchsia at. erle de Leon next best backed. Red 1 u.lisia led alor •» the straight from Aberfeldy, Perle de Leon, Vexatious, Pouri, Braeji in, Matu and Euchre. Along the back Aberfeldy ran to the front out was soon joined by Perle de Leon, the pair being well clear of Red Fuchsia, Matu and Pouri. Passing the stands the last time, Aberfeldy was in front from Perle de Leon, Red Fuchsia, Vexatious, Pouri, Matu and Braeman. Along the back the order was much the same. Crossing the top. Red Fuchsia, Aberfeldy and Perle de Leon were racing together, with Pouri, Vexatious and Matu next. Perle de Leon and Red .'fuchsia turned for home together, with . Pouri, Aberfeldy and Braeman next. In a great finish Red Fuchsia beat Perle de Leon by a head, with Pouri three lengths away third. Braeman, Aberfeldy, Matu and Vexatious followed. Favourite Wins Steeples.

Tuki was withdrawn from the Grandstand Steeplechase, and the public went for Puwhero, entrusting him with about £200 more /than Peter Maxwell, with Maunga and Mixed Heather best , supported of the others. . When they reached tho stands the first time Puwhero was in front, with Peter Maxwell, Royal Heather, Mixed. .Heather, Pas sin' Through, Polyphemus* Maunga and Sor o' Mine next. Puwhero held hie position as they crossed the stands double the second, time from Mixed Heather, Peter Maxwell, Maunga, r Passin' Through, Son o* Mine and Risk," !Polyphemua having fallen at the fint fence of thedkmWe. Puwhero was first into the straight from Mixed Heather, Son 'o* Mine, Maunga, Peter vlaxwell and Passin' Through, and went on to win by a length from Mixed Heather, who beat Son o* Mine by. three lengths. Maunga, Passin' Through, Royal Heather and Risk were next, Peter Maxwell having broken down after getting over the last fence.

Nearly Handtfd Away. Royal Damon and Horomea were withdrawn from the Empire Handicap. Glenrosa was favourite, carrying £320 more than Paitonu, with Blimp and Day Guard next fancied. Day Guard led along the etraight from Lin Arlington, Paitonu, Bonogne, Glenross, Blimp and Wanderlust. Along the back Day Guard wai attended by Lin Arlington, Bonogne, Partaga, Beaumont and Captain Gazeley. Across the top Day Guard was joined by Bonogne, with Lin Arlington, Blimp, Captain Gazeley, Beaumont, Partaga and Paitonu following. Bonogne was first to turn for home from Paitonu, Day Guard, Captain Gazeley, Glenross and Beaumont. Paitonu then took charge, and was taking things easily when Day Guard came with a great run and just failed to reach Paitonu by half a head. Barry nearly handed 4he race away. Bonogne was a length further back third, with Beau mont, Glenross, Black Mint, Captain Gazeley, Blimp and Lin Arlington next. Keddar Wins Easily. !

The eight carded for the Farewell Hack all saddled up and CaUanmore was first choice, but he only carried 60 tickets more than Keddar, Simple next best supported. Callanmore and Chelbne made the running along the back from Eka, Pee Simple, Keddar and Bangiutu. There was no change as they crossed the top. Entering the straight Chelone, Keddar and Callanmore were together, J"tli Fee Simple and Eka next. Keddar then drew out to win by two lengths from Callanmore, who beat Chelone by a nose. Fee Simple, Eka and Bangiutu were next.
