FINDING EMPLOYMENT.
REASONS FOR DIFFICULTY.
GOVERNMENT CRITICISED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
NAPIER, this day.
At a large meeting of unemployed men this morning the Government relief schemes were criticised, instances being given of married men going on relief jobs and coming off in debt.
The Mayor, Mr. J. Vigor Brown, expressed the opinion (that the relief of unemployment was a problem for the Government.
Speakers said the influx of immigrants was one of the main causes of unemployment. It was also stated that no scrubcutting, fencing and like work was now offering on farms, while modern machinery was removing the demand for wharf labourers for handling coal, oil and other products. i
The opinion was -expressed that the Government should open up fresh avenues of employment for those disappearing.
