INCIDENT OF 18 YEARS AGO. HORSE STEALING CHARGE. Charges of stealing a horse, saddl#tuid bridle and of receiving the same were made against Joseph O'Keefe, alias Hugh Sullivan, before Mr. Judtice Blair, at the Supreme Court this morning. Mr. Mackay appeared for arcused. • Mr. Osborne Lilly, in presenting the case for the Crown, mid accused went to Mr. Gustav Louis Hartman, farmer, of Tinohaka, near Raglan, in January, 1010, and asked for tihe loan of a horse, as he wanted to get his swag. He said ho was employed fcy bush falling contractors working <n Mr. Hartman's property. When he' ranted the horse again Mr. Hartman sail he would hire it to him. Accused agreed and went away with the horse, end did not return it. He sold it to a man in Ohaupo. Hartman gave evidence on these lines, and under cross-examination denied that he owed money to Accused. Counsel for accused said that when OTCeefe was interviewed by the police he made the statement as given by the police in evidence. He had nothing to hide. He dtiimed that money was owing to him far wages, and Hartman could not pay. He gave accused the horse, Raddle andl bridle as payment, and said no had a receipt. The affair occurred 18 ywß ago, and as he had knocked about from f&llar to post since it was not surprising he could not find the receipt. He oluqged his name because of domestic fnable. The case is proceeding.
