PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the New Lynn Town Board was held on Tuesday evening. The chairman (Mr. W. L. Titchener) presided, other members present 'being Messrs. C. E. H. Putt, R. P. Ward, J. S. Akehurst, I. Hughes, and A. J. Fielding.

Condolence.—The chairman feelingly referred to the passing of the board's first chairman, Mr. A. Grandieon, who died on Sunday last. A letter of condolence will be forwarded to Mrs. Grandieon and ■family.

Buildings.—The inspector reported that six permits had been issued since the last meeting and eight jobs were under construction.

Parker Avenue.—The traffic inspector recommended that improved lighting facilities be provided on this street. The board promised to give this matter favourable consideration when framing the estimates for the year.

Borough Petition.—The board's solicitor advised that the above petition was now 'being considered by the department.

Auckland Institute and Museum. — Letters were received from the Auckland City Council and Institute Council re the district's contribution towards the cost of the War Museum. The board decided to be represented at the meeting called by the City Council to discuss the matter,

•and the question of financial assistance will be considered when the year's estimates are under consideration.

Sewerage Works. —The engineer reported progress on the long tunnel and excavation for the main sewer, over 5000 ft of contract No. 2 had been driven. In respect to reticulation the loin and 12in sewers were complete; 10,000 ft of 9in and 12,000 ft of 6in had been laid, including 50 manholes. At the tank site the excavation was well advanced, and the protection walls had withstood the rough weather experienced without suffering damage.

The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was* held on Tuesday evening, the Mayor (Mr. E. G. Skeates) presiding.

Donation Declined. —Requests for donations to the Memorial Museum and Seddon Technical College were declined with regret. New Buildings.—Six permits for new buildings were granted. * Birken'head Post Office.—A communication from the Poi*t masterGeneral regarding the suggestion that the Post Office should be removed to Highbury corner, stated that while it was recognised that in its present position the office was not centrally situated, it meets all reasonable requirements. The adoption of the suggestion

to move the Poet Office to the vicinity of Highbury corner would involve the purchase of land and the erection of a new building. It was regretted that funds for this purpose were not at present available.

Kami Point Domain.— The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that if the borough council desired control of the Kauri Point Domain he would endeavour to «?oe this carried out. It "was resolved to repl.v that the council had agreed to have control of the Domain vested in it.

Clews reported that the cost of reconstructing j otreet between the Memorial Gates and the bitumen on the eastern side of the Doctor's Hill, a distance of 27 chains, in bitumen, would be £836 4/. The foreman estimated the cost of reforming and laying in permanent material, the main highway from the borough boundary on the Paerata road to the head of the present bitumen at Mr J. Adams place, at £1026. Specifications and estimate of cost are to be furnished to the Highways Board for approval, with the idea of obtaintowards the cost of the work, which it is proposed to put in hand next summer.
