CAMBRIDGE CLUB.

TROTTING IN CANTERBURY,

A BAD DIP

ANNUAL MEETING, MAY 5.

SATUBDAY WEEK'S HANDICAPS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) -HAMILTON, this day. The following handicaps have been declared for the annual meeting of the Cambridge Trotting Club on Saturday week, May 5 :— ■

PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP < Saddle) of ISOsovs. One mile and a-quartsr. .(Limit

METROPOLITAN CLUB HAS SUCCESSFUL SEASON.

No better indication can be had of the popularity of the trotting sport in Canterbury than is disclosed by the increase in the Metropolitan Club's totalisator turnover on that of last season, says "Observer" in the Christchurch "Star." The figures for 1926-27 were as follow: —

£ s. August (-three days) 120.625 0 Xovemt>er (three days) 3 56,787 0 February (one day) 27,844 1 0 April (two days) 84,428 10 Total . £308,685 0 Those for the current season are:— £ s. August 144.706 0 Novem'ber IS3,] S5 10 February 31,094 10 April 86,536 10 Total £445,522 10 It will be seen that an increase was recorded in each meeting, and the club finishes up the present season with the most unusual increase of 837 10/. From the point of view of the trotting fraternity, this is a most gratifying state of affairs, and taking into consideration the splendid attendances and additional means of revenue besides totalistor percentage, the premier club must have experienced a most successful season. This may mean that something can be done to return some of the stakes of the better class events to the values they held before the compulsory "cut" some time ago.

So many horses broke iip badly at the dip in the course just beyond the mile post that it might be wise on the part of the Te Aroha Trotting Club if, when drawing up the programme for next year's annual fixture, the committee considered making no race of a less journey than a mile and a-quarter. Several drivers and riders who held the reins on Saturday expressed the opinion that in a mile race the horses do not settle down because of the dip, and they never get a chance to become properly balanced.
