MARLBOROUGH RACING CLUB.

FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM.

ORATRIX REVENGED ON VESPERUS,

ROYAL CERES TAKES SPRINT.

REED PAYS TWELVE DIDIDENDS

AT MEETING

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

WELLINGTON, Monday.

The Marlborough Racing Club's autumn meeting concluded at Trentham to-day in perfect weather. There was a fair attendance, and the machine put through £25,512 10/, making a total of £55,797. The figures for the two days of the 1927 meeting, held on the club's own course at Watetlea were £15,863.

From the extra £40,000 rung up the Marlborough' Club should derive considerable benefit, as a result of the arrangements with the Wellington Racing Club to race at Trentham.

Roy Reed put up a New Zealand record by riding seven firsts and six seconds in thirteen starts. His mounts paid twelve dividends, there being only a one-dividend field in the remaining race, in which he piloted the second h»rse. Five Starters in Hurdles. Polyphemus and Vexatious carried the bulk of the money, Polyphemus being a good favourite. Lady Passenger and Vexatious made the running to the straight, Polyphemus lying last. The latter moved up at the half and led over the last hurdle, and then Vexatious came away and beat him -by two lengths, a similar margin separating tlie third horse, Lady Passenger, with Panorama fourth. Vexatious won well, but Polyphemus made his run too soon, and in addition jumped badly at two fences in the concluding stages. After the race Polyphemus was sold to Mr. John McLeod, New Plymouth, and goes into J. Fryer's stable at Hawera. Favourite Fails. Inflame was a good favourite for the Trial Handicap, with Freeze Out also solidly backed, and soma money for Second Thought. Inflame and Vindication led to the straight from Freeze Out. When in line Second Thought came through on the rails, and got up to beat Inflame bv a head in the last stride. Freeze Out was three lengths back, and Tatrina fourth. Second Thought was greatly improved bv his I race on Saturday, and he showed* this very plainly in his preliminary. He was most capably handled by young Webster. * * c Smallest Field of Meeting. ' In the three-horse race for the hack mile, Borsalene was a good favourite. She was always in front and going like a winner, holding off Kindle at° the finish by half-a length. Holus Bolus was six lengths back. Oratrix in Big Money. Oratrix was a good favourite for the Flaxbourne Handicap, Vesperus, Beaumont and Joy Bird also being well backed. Beaumont made the running from Oratrix, Lady Gay and Vesperus, and at the half-mile the order was Beaumont and Oratrix, from Vesjterus and Joy Bird, with Kilmiss movint; up fast. Oratrix headed off Beaumont at the false rail, and beat him by a length. Vesperus failing by half a-length° to reach Beaumont. Joy Bird was a fair fourth, and Kilmiss next. Oratrix got a good run and won decisively.

Panther too Solid. Panther was a warm favourite for the hack seyen furlongs, from Maui and Keddar. Bissac soon put a break on, the field and led round the turn from Keddar and Rotowhero, Panther and Maui having dropped back from their handy early positions. Keddar challenged once the straight was reached, but here Panther came strongly and got up to beat Keddar by half-a length. Bissac was a similar distance away, with Billion fourth. Then came Maui and Rotowhero. Panther won decisively, his finishing run being too solid for the opposition. Betting Indicates Result. Royal Duke was a strong favourite for the two-year-old handicap, and Briar Root was the only other backed to beat him. Royal Duke and Briar Root were always in front, and they drew away in the run home, Royal Duke winning by half-a length. Stanchion was five lengths back third, with Roi de Val fourth, and then Mount Shannon and First Ruler. The money indicated the result, which was never in doubt. Favourite Unlucky. Catkin started a hot favourite for the open sprint. Miss Pat . led the bunch to the straight, Dobbin being next to her. Once in line Dobbin failed to make much impression, but Royal Ceres and Catkin came fast over the last bit, and Royal Ceres got up and beat Catkin by a head, with Miss Pat half-a neck away, and Dobbin fourth. Kilperon was not far away. There was nothing in the finish between the placed horses. Catkin was not too lucky. Helotis too Speedy. Helotis, Singlespear, Eka and Quantum were all well-backed in the concluding event. Helotis, Eka, Singlespear and Mark Mint were the most prominent to the straight, where Helotis strode away and won with ease, by three lengths, from Eka, who beat Singlespear by a length/ Quantum was fourth, then came Mark Mint aud Rash. Helotis was the only one with a winning chance from start to finish, bein® too speedy for her opponents.
