SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The next luncheon talk at the Lyceum Club will take place oil May 10, when the members wfll be addressed by Mrs. Algie on "A Mountaineering Holiday in the Murchison Valley. • • # •

At Ohura $ number of ladies from different parts of the country met at the residence of Mrs. J. F. MeClenaghan in order to bid farewell to Mrs. Seerup, who is leaving shortly on a visit to her parents in Ireland. The guests were entertained with music, and after afternoon tea had been partaken of, Mrs. W. S. Currie presented Mrs. Seerup with a travelling rug and wished her "bon voyage" and a safe return to New Zealand.

At the usual meeting of the Auckland Women's Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party it was decided to commence a Dominion-wide campaign for the abolition of compulsory military training, and a committee wais set up with power to act. The secretary was instructed to write to Miss Basten, asking that Labour women delegates l>e included in Miss Maud Hoyden's committee. It was decided to hold a jumble sale in aid of the branch funds att the end of May. Mrs. Cassie, the delegate to the conference, gave a report and was thanked for her attendance.

A meeting of the Query Club was held yesterday afternoon, when Miss J. Tapper presided over a large attendance of members. Arrangements were completed for the araraa/l dance. It

was agreed to take a stall at the City Mission Fair in June. Members expressed a wish that the president should place a wreath on the Cenotaph on Anzac Day, and this was agreed to. At the conclusion of the formal business tea was served, and the president then took the opportunity of expressing the best wishes of the members to Mrs. Norman Stephenson (nee Miss Hazel Wight)', who was recently married, and who acted as hon. secretary to the club before her marriage. A presentation was made to Mrs. Stephenson, who thanked the members for their gift.

Miss Spencer's ballroom 011 .Saturday night had many dainty gowns when the colouring by the large shaded lights were most attractive in powder blue and beige lattice-worked ribbons. Hanging baskets of soft ferns and brackets of pink and blue flowers decorated the walls. Mr. Jack Eowe's orchestra were compelled to repeat many of their items. OVer a hundred guests attended Mrs. Patten's tea dansant on Saturday afternoon, which was held at Nairn's reception rooms. Unique were the decorations of multi-coloured frayed streamers, which cauie from the centre of the ceiling to each corner, and were caught to pedestals of red and white flowers. Palins and other foliage adorned the walls. All sorts of favours were distributed to the guests. Part of the Onehunga Band discoursed classical music, and Miss Judd's orchestra supplied the latest jazz items. Mr. A. McElwain also helped to entertain the guests with some smart recitations. The Click Clack Cabaret had a very flood attendance on Saturday evening. The Sylvans Band, under the leadership of Mr. Geo. Shorland, rendered the latest jazz and were frequently encored.
