RACING AT AVONDALE.

THE AUTUMN MEETING. TO BE HELD ON OWN COURSE. THE FIELDS REVIEWED. The autumn meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club will be inaugurated tomorrow, when an excellent programme will be presented. This will be the first time the club has held a meeting on their own course for two years, and visitors will be surprised at the great alterations that have been made to the track. It is now nine furlongs in circumference, instead of a mile, and is 99ft in width, with excellent turns, which are splendidly banked. There is a fine sole of grass on the course, and with its long straight it should thoroughly test the competitors. It only needs nne weather to make the meeting a thorough success. In order to mark the opening the club has decided to allow the public to the outside enclosure free of charge. The Opening Event. Twelve are carded for the Maiden Plate, and British King is topweight with 9.9. He won the Trial Stakes (six furlongs) so well at Whangarei that he will have to be considered. Storm Fiend will not start. Maori Boy was third to British King and Solanio at Whangarei, while Bonibarder was second in two seven-furlong events at the Takapuna summer meeting. Merry Light led into the straight in the first division of the Bombay Handicap at the Franklin meeting, while Diamond Queen was second to Miss Mercia when the field turned for home in the Nelson Hai.dicap at Ellerslie last Monday. Probably the public may give most support to BRITISH KING BOMBARDER DIAMOND QUEEN The Hurdles. Eight are carded for the Hobsonville Hurdles, and Archibald is topweight with 11.9. He was going very nicely in the Brighton Hurdle Race when he came to grief at the obstacle six furlongs from home. Uralla finished second in the Mangere Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday, but was unplaced in the Trial Hurdle Race. She has 91b less to carry to-morrow than in the latter event. Lady Cintra failed to get into the money in the Brighton Hurdle Race at Ellerslie on Saturday, but with 10.6 won the Trial Hurdle Race, two furlongs shorter, on the second day. ■ Lady Spalpeen ran well in the Brighton Hurdles till striking a fence near'the three-furlong post, and eventually finished fifth. On that occasion she had 9.9, and now has 9.11. She was third in the Trial Hurdle Race on Monday, carrying 10.5. Of the others Karamu may be the best. Probably when the machine closes the elect, will be LADY SPALPEEN LADY CINTRA ARCHIBALD The Chief Handicap.

The Foley Memorial is the chief handicap event of the day and a good field is engaged. Star Stranger is top weight with 10.1, and though he did not run up to expectations in the Autumn Handicap on Monday he may do better in this event, for the long

straight will suit him. He has l>een dropped a couple of pounds. Edeu Hall has 8.3, and he has run some good races recently, being second in the Whangarei Cup, third in the Alison Cup at Takapuna, while he won the Takapuna Cup. He dead-heated with Transformer for second place in the Takapuna Handicap, was third in the Taranaki Cup and was just beaten in the Wanganui Cup. He is nicely placed at 8.3. Desert Glow did not impress at Ellerslie, finishing wall back each day. However, he wou the Te Awapiutu Cup, the Takapuna Handicap and the Ohinemuri Cup. In the Shade won the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie in good style and performed well over a mile and three-quarters when he ran second to Satrap in the Great Northern St. Leger Stakes. With 7.11 he should run a good race. Town Bank put up two good performances at Ellerslie when he finished third in the President's Handicap, carrying 7.1, and second in the Autumn Handicap with 7.2 J. He will be in demand. Papatu was second in the A.R.C. President's Handicap to Mask with 7.3, and though unplaced in the Autumn Handicap, carrying 7.6, ran a good race till the straight was reached, finishing fifth just behind Mandane. Princess Ronnie was third in the Autumn Handicap with 7.2J and now-has 7.5. Valkon can go a mile and a-quarter and his effort in finishing second in the Islington Handicap, one mile, at Ellerslie on Monday with 9.4 in the saddle will not be forgotten. He has the nice handy impost of 7.5. Transformer did not impress at Ellerslie, while of the others Day Guard, Branson and Queen Arch may be the best. Probably the best backed will be: . VALKON EST THE SHADE TOWN BANK The Oakley. Handicap. Thirteen have been paid up for in tie Oakley Handicap. Micrometer is in pride of place with 8.10. She has good form to commend her this season and ran a good_ fourth in the Eden

Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday. Modest Boy failed at Ellerslie, but he might be an improved horse as the result of his racing there. Ohinemuri won the Eden Handicap with 7.1 from end to end and has now 8.6, but this should not be prohibitive to the sister to Te Monanui. Piet has won up to a mile and a furlong, his last success being at the Franklin meeting. Auriculus ran a great race in the Great Northern Oaks, being second to Damans and should perform well to-morrow. Miss Mercia and Respirator may appeal most of the others engaged. The best supported when the machine closes may be: OHINEMURI MICROMETER AURICULUS The Weight-for-Age Event. Ten remain in the All-Aged Stakes, and the race should be a good one. Aussie has 9.10, but he won the Huia Handicap with 6.9, and he is sure to be favourite. He is meeting Joy King, who finished second to him, on 31b better terms. Paganelli can go fast for six furlongs, but at Ellerslie, after running a good race till the straight in the Easter Handicap, failed to get away properly in the Huia Handicap. Lysander will have to improve on anything ha has done for a good while to win, but among the two-year-olds Prince Humph-! rey and White Wings may be hard to dispose of. The most of the investments will probably go on AUSSIE PAGANELLI JOY KING The Chevalier Handicap. Aston has proved himself a useful sprinter in the south, winning two fivefurlong races and one six furlong event out of five starts. Waltzer scored at the Bay of Plenty meeting, defeating Dimmer and others over six furlongs. Wliaka King has ran some good races this season, winning a division of the Vauxhall Handicap, seveit furlongs, at Takapuna, and scoring over six at the Bay of Plenty meeting, while he has been placed on other occasions. Welcome Home won nicely at Whangarei, while Lady's Boy, since scoring at the Matamata meeting, has won in his last five starts, including the Elstow Handicap at Te Aroha, in which he beat a good field. Dimmer has won over six furlongs, while Newbury showed he was returning to form by finishing third in the Nelson Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday. Wyoming scored over seven furlongs at the Ohinemuri meeting and Pinon showed as though she was coming back to form when she resumed racing after a lengthy spell at the last Whangarei meeting. British King and Desert Knight both performed well at Whangarei, and Valh.r won over six furlongs at the Franklin meeting. Probably the best backed division will be WHAKA KING LADY'S BOY NEWBURY The Sprinters. The Railway Handicap is the principal sprint handicap of the day. Nancy Lee ran well enough at Ellerslie when she finished third to Aussie and Joy King to suggest that she will take some beating. Awarere won the Railway Handicap, and has since captured a sprint race at Paeroa, while he was second in the Easter Handicap. He galloped well yesterday morning at lie and will have a lot of friends.

Flying Juliet is good up to a mile and by the manner in which she won the Islington Handicap on Monday at Ellerslie she will be hard to dispose of. Kingfield ran well at Ellerslie, and lie will not. be neglected, while of the others Covent Garden and Subdivision may do best. Probably the elect will be AWARERE KINGFIELD FLYING JULIET The Concluding Event. The programme will conclude with the Titirangi Handicap and Le Choucas, Who ran a good race in the President's Handicap at Ellerslie for over a mile, is top weight with 9.2. Romford won well over seven furlongs at Paeroa, while Judge's Box was just beaten in a mile at Whangarei. . Quincoma is also useful over eight furlongs, while Mervette may be the best of the others. Probably when the machine closes the favourite division will be ROMFORD LE CHOUCAS JUDGE'S BOX The route for vehicular traffic to the course from the Great North Road is via Victoria Road, to Roscbank Road, to Canal Road, Wicklow Avenue, and Wharf Road. The return route is via Wharf Road and Rosebank Road. The first race is timed to start at 11.30 a.m., and there will be a frequent train service, commencing at 9.45 a.m., to Avondale. The programme is as follows:— 11.30 a.m.—MAIDEN PLATE of 200sovs. Seven furlongs. St. lb. St. lb.
