King Emerald ran a fair race in the Huia j-j.aiiaicap, being in sixtn position at tlie nnish. lie liau not liaa a iace lor some time, and the outing snouid serve to improve nun for his engagement in tlie Kailway iiandicap ut tomorrow. The Maniapoto gelding Haliepoto has improved very iasi, since being re-eoui-missioned by it. Conway, no woikcu very iroeiy over a rounu on inu _ >v) . grabs tracK at liillerslie and should be in capital eoi.u.uua >Z contest jumping events later on m u, season. Sir Archie lias commenced work again at Ellerske, alter a brief spell, injuries received. in a ran way wnen returning from the franklin ing. To all appearances the gelding has quite recovered, out um.i ne is given a sound test 110 denude can be formed. The speedy chestnut gel-Jing Newbury has sho\vn promising iuini .11 u,s two last appearances in pukji.o uuu 10 nolding his • condition much oetuer uaa lie has previously done. J. W nas NewDury in good order at ine present time, and he is likely to sUow in his early engagements.

Mi*. H. A. KuiglitTias got a nice two-year-old by Orby's l J riue to wlioru he sent his brood mare Comely. The youngster is named Synonym, and although he ran last in the two-year-old race on Tuesday he is a good-looking gelding who should turn out all right next season.

The decisive manner in which Romford defeated his opponents in the Waikino Handicap at Uie Ohinemuri meeting, will gain him a lot of support in tlxe- Titirangi Handicap, to be decided on the opening day of the Avondale meeting. Romford is a promising gelding, from whom better things can be expected.

Barometer, who claims an engagement in the Titirangi Welter at the Avondale meeting to-morrow, hit out very freely over six furlongs on the tan at Ellerslie yesterday morning. W. Townsend has the Thurnliam gelding looking really well, and he looks a likely proposition when he has track conditions to suit him.

When he scored in the Tourist Handicap at the Te Aroha meeting High Pitch did not meet a very strong field. He has raced on several occasions since then without getting in the money, and unless he has made a deal of improvement in the meantime his chances of winning a race at the Avondale meeting do not appear bright.

The form displayed by Desert Knight at the Ohinemuri and Whangarei meetings indicates that the Mountain Knight gelding is on the improve and likely to show up in future hack contests. His second to Melissa in the Portland Handicap at the Whangarei meeting was quite good enough to warrant him being a possibility in hack events at the Avondale meeting.

Storm Fiend ran two seconds in the maiden hack class at the Franklin meeting, and his track form in the interval has been snfficientlyi good to ensure him again performing well in a similar class at Avondale to-morrow. J 1 he Swift Flight gelding is a good beginner, and that will be something in his favour in the big field that is likely to contest the Maiden Plate at Avondale.

Twelve months ago Papatu won the Foley Memorial, when he was credited with running the mile and a-quarter attached to the ra6e in 2.7 3-5, with 7.3 in the saddle. Papatu has 7.5 in the event to be decided at Avondale tomorrow, and taking a line through his performance in the President's Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday, in which race he finished second to Mask, he should again be capable of taking a hand in the settlement of the mile and a-quarter event.

A brilliant effort over five furlongs on the Ko. 2 grass track was recorded by Aussie and Awarere at Ellerslie yesterday morning. Both these geldings came through their racing at the Auckland nieeting in fine order, and their performance in covering five furlongs in 1.1 reads well for their future prospects. Aussie is to contest the All-aged Stakes and Awarere the Railway Handicap at the Avondale meeting to-morrow, and both these horses are sure to be solidly supported in their respective engagements.

Ohinemuri won the Eden Handicap on Saturday last at Ellerslie by a big marpin, and it is safe to say that on the day it would have taken a lot of extra poundage to have brought her back to the field. She has done wfcll since the meeting and registered a good gallop over six furlongs at headquarters yesterday morning. If produced in the Oakley Handicap at the Avondale meeting tomorrow the Paeroa-trained mare will command strong support, despite the fact that she is required to carry a big Increase in weight.

Those on the look-out for a Jikely winner of an important handicap, in the spring, the New Zealand Cup for instance, should make a note of the Riccarton ihvee-year-old Starflight (saye "Wateher"). Star flight has not done a great deal of racing, but he looks certain to develop into a very useful handicap horse. He is by Archery from Stardaneer, the dam of Limelight and Paperchase,. and shows all the reso-. lute galloping qualitice of the family» besides shaping like ft real fl<fcay©ft

Stormy <will race at Awapuni next week, and he was due to arrive yesterday morning from tlie south in company with Crown Area (says a southern writer). Stormy is coming to his form, but may possibly need another race yet.

The consistent hack sprinter Lady's Boy is down for an engagement in the Chevalier Handicap of six furlongs at Avondale to-morrow. The Some Boy 11. gelding, who is now well up in the weights, is opposed to some speedy hacks, and is likely to be well tested if saddled up for the six-furlong event to-morrow. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been made for the Avondale meeting, which opens to-morrow: — L. Pine: Storm Fiend, Wyoming and Lysander. L. Husband: Eager Rose, Restaurant, King Emerald and Gold Money (second day). J. Cammick: Branson, Wee Marble and Auriculus. R. McTavish: Bombarder, Newbury. Desert Glow, Romford, Paganelli. S. Henderson: Appellant, Lady Spalpeen arid Arihana. L. Manson: Diamond Queen, Royal Tea and Judge's Box. H. Wiggins: Princess Ronnie, Vallar, Josie Melville and Tinokoa. A. Driscoll: Idun and Archeno. A. Tinker: Aussie and Awarere. K. Gill: Papatu. A. McCorniac: Micrometer. NOTES FROM WAIKATO. HORSES FOR AVONDALE. MUSKETOON RETIRED TO STUD. The Waikato Club has received a good list of nominations for its autumn meeting on April 28 and 30. The minor events have filled particularly well, while the principal handicaps contain fields of good size and an even class. The Te Aroha hack Lady's Boy was in nice order when he laft to fulfil his Avondale engagements. The Some Boy 11. gelding has been thriving on his track work and improving with the racing he has had. He has been on the winning list several times this season. The effort to prepare Muslcetoon for a further racing career has been relinquished. The English bred horse is to do stud dutv-in the Te Aroha district.

The Te Rapa trainer J. F. Tutchen took Raiti Hiki to Ellerslie with the intention of starting him in the Trial Hurdles. The Spalpeen gelding developed leg trouble and had to forego his engagement. Partial Eclipse and Speechless are now being trained by A. Cook at Te Awamutu. Although he made a fair showing in his second day engagement at the Ohinemuri meeting, Luminary, who is in the M: "l::a Handicap at Avondale to-morrow, will require a good deal more fast work before he can be recommended. Pend&vies on $he tracks at Te Rapa, where he is being prepared for the jumping campaign in the winter, and with \Viltshire and Pendennis also under his charge R. C. Syme has a useful trio for the department referred to. The Winterbourne gelding Bourn has been away from racing for some months, owing to unsoundness. He is to make a return to the game at the VVaikato meeting, where he figures in tfie hurdle events. Prince Lu was in good order when he left Cambridge for Avondale. He has won a couple of races this season, and may be heard from again before the winter is over. Kingfield ran a good rac3 with the sprinters in the Huia Handicap at the Auckland meeting, being fourth after showing up from barrier rise. The Cambridge trained sprinter is on the improve and should give a good account of himself at Avondale. Mervette's work at Te Rapa of recent times has been performed in a pleasing manner. The Lucullus —Brayton filly is engaged at Avondale, where she is not likely to be neglected. Lady Spalpeen is likely to be among the favoured candidates in the hurdles at Avondale to-morrow. Although the Te Aroha representative is somewhat erratic in her work over the battens, she has a handy weight, and with a reasonable run should be well up at the finish. Llandudno is in work again with a view to being raced at the Waikato meeting. The Formative gelding always does well on a light preparation, and is favourable to soft conditions. At Te Rapa in the spring he won at ten furlongs in. 2.6 1-5. King Quin is to come back to racing at Te Rapa at the end of the month. The Quin Abbey—Chlorine gelding has done so little serious galloping of recent times that he must be considered a doubtful proposition at this stage of the season. Romford will come in for marked attention in the Titirangi Handicap at Avondale. The Nassau—Fallwin chestnut has gone on the right way ice his victory at Paeroa, and he will Keep the best of the opposition very busy. Flying Juliet should be equal to giving a good account of herself with the sprinters at Avondale. The Te ..Rapa candidate is back to near her best form again, and will only require to begin promptly to be in the issue all the way.

Branson will be among the best company he has so far encountered when he lines up with the Foley Memorial field to-morrow. The Greyspear gelding disappointed at Ellerslie on Monday, hut he was reported to be not quite himself on that occasion. With his light weight lie should be handy in the ten furlongs to-morrow.

Bright Day has done a . good deal of travelling lately without being successful in earning a winning bracket. It seems as if the son of Day Comet arid' Lady Gwendoline has passed his best, although he. may pick up a stake or two before the season is out.

Transformer's form- at Ellerslie was hardly correct. If the galloping conditions are to his liking at Avondale the Thurnham gelding may acquit himself more'effectively.
