OBITUARY.

MR. J. H. MORTENSEN. WELL-KNOffo UNION SECRETARY. Many friends in. Auckland will learn with regret that Mr. James-Horace Mortensen, the wejl-known secretary of the Auckland Grocers Assistants' Union, died suddenly on Saturday, at his residence, 55, Ridimond Road, Ponsonby, at the age of 48 years. Mr. Mortenseu was born in New Zealand, and for the last 30 years lived in Auckland. During his earlier years Mr. Mortensen was a keen volunteer, being in the Aftillery. He held a world championship for gun laying.

Mr. Mortensen's range of trade union activities was extensive. For the past 15 years lie had been secretary of the Grocers Assistants' Union, and for 12 years occupied a similar position for the Auckland Chemists Employees' Union. He had also for nine years been secretary of the Auckland Retail Shop Assistants' Union.

On many occasions Mr. Mort.cnsen had acted on behalf of his various unions at the sittings of the Courts of Arbitration. Ke was also very interested in work for the benefit of various charitable instituti<yis, taking an active part in the charity campaigns organised by the shop assistants of the city. For the last four years he was particularly active in regard to the campaigns for Christmas gifts. Deceased is survived by Mrs. I Mortensen, also a son and a daughter.

For long years he had been a conspicuous figure in public affairs, as member of the Waitaki County Council, Ota«;o Education Board, Waitaki High School Hoard, Hospital Board, committee of the A. and P.
