WELLINGTON NOTES.

HORSES FOR AUCKLAND. THE C.J.C. MEETING. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

jr WELLINGTON, this day. e The Great Autumn Handicap candidate 11 Tresham went south last night in charge of T. F. Quinlivan. Shirley, winner of the last Great t> Easter Handicap, went south last night - to make her second attempt on the prize. * She has done well enough since racing at 1 Trentham to justify the trip. * The three-year-old filly Tripaway was ? left in the Great Northern Oaks, but she ran so poorly at Master ton on Saturday that the trip to Ellerslie was abandoned '» and she was shipped south last night. 8 O. Cox goes south to-morrow night * with Reremoana, Lady Desmond and f Barryanda. .T, M. Cameron left The Hawk in the C.J.C. Challenge Stake* and had every intention of running him. however, he changed his plans last week and arrived i in Wellington on Thursday night, leaving on Friday for Sydney by the Maun- , ganui. The Hawk was withdrawn from , his engagement. I .W. J. Donovan, another Hawke's Bay . trainer, joined Cameron on the trip to Sydney. The trotter Peterwah was sent south , last night to fulfil engagements at t Addington. > T. J. Daly takes Mr. W. R. Kemball's I pair, Hynanna and Miss Ransom, to i Riccarton to-morrow night. Daly states that both horses are fit and well and i ready to show their best form in their engagements. R. .T. Mackie will be riding at Tauherenikau on Saturday, and will leave that night for Christchurch to ride at j the Canterbury Easter meeting. J. Barry will be riding at FeUding and will also catch the south boat on Saturday night. F. Davis leaves Woodville to-day for Ellerslie with Great Charter, Doree and Pure Gold. Gascony will not make the trip as he is very sore after his race in the North Island Challenge Stakes. The two-year-old Pure Gold may not be ready to show her best form, as she has not been in very long after a good spell at Okawa. Great Charter is doing all right. So far no rider for him has been engaged in the Easter Handicap, but there is a chance that T. Green may be up on One of J. T. Jamleson's representatives. If ridden by Green Great Charter will have to carry several pounds overweight. Staghunter and Wild Pigeon, left for Ellerslie yesterday. Staghunter's race at Masterton on Saturday was riot quite up to expectations in view of the Great, Northern Xhapipagne Stakes, although his ' trainer appeared quite.. satisfied after the race. Taking all things into consideration^—weight', running and the long straight for*his finishing run—Staghunter was frankly disappointing, more so when he•• appeared as if he had had plenty of work and was not short of a gallop. At any rate it contrasted unfavourably w.ith Raft say's very! epsy victory at Napier last month over the same distance on a heavy track, with only 31b less up. Staghunter, of course, may ipiprove, but he will also find considerable progress in that direction made by Raasay and Episode since the Wellington meeting. > Strategy has been a long time off the scene, his last public appearance having been on November 28, 1925, in a hurdle race at the FeiTding Jockey Club's spring riieeting*. Strategy appeared again in the Highweight Handicap at Masterton on Saturday and .he ran a very creditable raee until reaching the straight. He was never'further back than third, and once in line he reached the front. Condition then told its tale, and he finished well back. He has been sound lately and he pulled up well so that if he goes on? all right he should be equal to earning another stake or two, for at his best he was a galloper of very good class. -The Chief Ruler filly, First Ruler, ran a couple of creditable races at Masterton. She is a nice looking sort and might soon rwinta race'. • ;,f' v . f | 8%-:!s sore; yefehe ran ttoo good rac:es"ftt Masterton'. With the softening of the tracks he should be a winner. Vigilance has paid her way well and is now as fit as she has been at any stage of her career. Royal Damon affords a striking, instance of class. Last week at Masterton he was equal in Carrying lOst and running six furlongs in 1.13 2-5 to win with ease, yet when pitted against the best class at Ellerslie and Trentham with round about Bst in the saddle he never wins arid is seldom placed. I remember L. G. Morris several months ago telling: me that this was Royal Damon's strength. It shows that he summed up the gelding's capabilities very correctly.
