The racing was good and the fixture was well ,] patronised. ' -If it had been a two days - meeting thflre, tis little. doubt that the - j fields woul(t )£»eep considerably ] larger and the meeting would have' been 1 much more interesting-* for a good many owners would, haya beeri ,inclined to send their horses ,f6K two, days where they 1 would not-toW^takfe.Hhe-trip for one } However, W B ,^;c ? me, from as far south { as New Plymouth, and it was worth 1 while, for Mel?ssa- who was one of them ' 1 >' scored TJlxo£: ' t lifer to , for tifie com- " fort of visitdi'a, and to him, the com- t mittee and the secretary, Mr. F w I Webster, most of the success iSnralfe due ] Owing to the absence pf'Mr/C. E Bi Furthermore, occasion at' least, ■ he quickly stood a-fractioHS horse behind the field, which was quite right. His starting met with much favourable com- ' ment.

Mr. J. Pohlen, of Matamata, left by the Marama last week, en route for England. Mr. Pohlen will probably purchase an English-bred horse while in the Old Country, providing he can secure one to suit him.

Prince Rufus was responsible for two creditable performances at the Ohinemuri meeting. If started in the Mangere Steeplechase at Ellerslie at the end of the week the Te Kapa-trained gelding will command plenty of support and is pure to run well.

The Polydamon gelding, Salamander, has shown some improvement in his track work of late, while he also looks a better conditioned horse. Salamander has been a long time showing form, but the chances are that he will probably race better in the future.

Two additions to F. Stenning's team at Ellerslie are:—Fernden, by Redfern from Meriden, an Australian-bred two-year-old; and a half-sister to Sir Archie by Valkyrian from Lady Marble. Both these youngsters are the property of the Matamata sportsman, Mr. J. Pohlen.

Since being recommissioned by J. Buchanan, Brampton has done well and th« Lord Quex gelding is rounding up into shape nicely. He had half-a-dozen races last season as a two-year-old, his second to Tea Lady in the Nursery Handicap at the Avondale meeting being his best effort.

Royal Tea, the good looking son of Tea Tray and Duchesi Eudorus, is working in improved form at Ellerslie. This gelding, who is doing practically all of his tasks on the tart jtrack,.appears to be standing up to his work in good style and it would tie pleasing to see owner rewarded with a win in the future.

The Riccarton trainer, T. H. Oillett, who is at Ellerslie in charge of Satrap and Money Order, states that Count CavOur iaujpow. plmost recovered from the injuries he-sustained at the Auckland summer, meeting. Count Cavour wi U be. required t# race again «ntil next, season,: -ft f: Ts

Mashoor, a Mangere steeplechase candidate, gave a pleasing display over the steeplechase fences ,on the" fiat last Saturday morning at Ellerslie. He had a cojjple of, races onl the fiat at, the Franklin meeting, but may require a bit more experience in jumping events before being seen at his best."

Although he hqi bever won over a distance extending to eight fyrlongs, Winsome Boy has -bfen *» shewing good form over distances ?;|ip to seven furlongs. When he scored in the Ferry Handicap at Takapuria he was running on well at the end of that race, so the extra furlong attached, to the, Edefe Handicap may not befbeyond him. ' "

The Whapgarei Racing Club have improved their course since the previous meeting and it w«s in very fine order for 'the autumn fixture on Saturday. The five and six-furlong posts have been altered to allow of a better start, and it is Singular that in the five-furlong race and also in one of the six-furlong event* the winner had an «outside' position.

i The Whangarei • Racing Club ( :was nearly placed in a most unenviable position on Saturday/ In the last race Ballymoy got interfered ( but immediately after the' race when Mr. A. Gordon, the stipendiary steward, wanted to call the stewards together for an inquiry the majority had gone and the meeting could not be held until the evening. If it had been something seriously affecting the paying out of the dividend the position Jiaver been j a very awkward one, for there were a lot of people present who, had oome long distances and they would' iuive ;:i>een unable to wait till the ; stewards \tere gathered together. This is another argument in favour of handing the control of meetings over to stipendiary stewards. They are paid experts and knOw when there should be an inquiry. Anyhow, the honorary stewards, while the present system < sS ; fn : operation, should see that their services are no longer required before they leave the course.
