HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

Man Who Would Clean Up Township. ECHO OF BUSHRANGING DAYS. (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day.

A story reminiscent of the bushranging days comes from the Albury district.

A youth named Taylor was riding a horse across the Wadonga bridge when a man suddenly" jumped out and, presenting a rifle, ordered Taylor to dismount. Then the man mounted the horse and rode away. Another horseman, witnessing the incident, pursued the desperado who, as he was being overtaken, turned and fired two shots from a rifle, one narrowly missing the pursuer's head and the other wounding his horse. The animal, rearing, unseated the rider and the highwayman cantered on to the township of Balldale. Meantime the police had been warned and as the man dismounted at a house Constable Ryan rushed him and after a short struggle arrested him.

Besides a rifle, the man was found to be in possession of an automatic revolver and 1000 rounds of ammunition. He told the arresting constable that he had meant to clean up the whole township and escape to the rough country on the other side of the Murray River.
