SMYRNA DISASTER
SEVERE EARTHQUAKE Loss Of Life And Heavy Property Damage. CASUALTIES NUMBER 40 OR 60. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) CONSTANTINOPLE, April 1.
An earthquake in the Smyrna district resulted in great loss of life. Many persons were injured, and widespread damage was caused.
The first shock occurred at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday, and lasted one and a-half minutes. Others followed at 3.5 a.m. and 0.52 a.m. A number of houses and a clock-tower collapsed. A factory building and chimneys were damaged. It is reported that 40 or 50 persons were killed or injured.
The district of Torbali suffered severely. Two hundred houses were wrecked, and ten people were injured. Relief has been sent to the homeless.
News from Angora states that a mountain-side collapsed on the road from Trebizond to Erzerum. Traffic was interrupted, and several houses w*re destroyed. — (A. and N.Z. and Sydney "Sun.")
