"AUSTRALIA AS TAUGHT."
I sympathise with "Ballarat." It is annoying to line! such ignorance of Australia in New Zealand. But "probably there is just as much ignorance of New Zealand in Australia. The fact is that there are manv people in every country who have the haziest notion of geography and events out- ; de their own boundaries. Xo amount of teaching will give them an interest in such tilings. Years ago a number of French conscripts were tested for general knowledge. A number of them had never heard not only of neighbouring countries like Germany and Belgium but of their own Napoleon. An Auckland woman, in thanking a local lecturer for explanations about the war, said she had always thought Gibraltar was o:i the West Coast of Africa, but she was interested to find it was on the North Sea. Even the great are ignorant. Is it not on record that a British representative at the Peace Conference confused Silesia and Cilicia? GEOGRAPHICAL.
