ENEMIES OF THE BUSH.
The Minister in charge of the Tourist Department has just been congratulating the people of New Plymouth on raising about £10,000 for the improvement of accommodation at the North Egmont hostelry. He al.>o spoke with enthusiasm of the beautiful bush surrounding the mountain, and the need for rendering it accessible to the general public. But Mr. Nosworthy seemed surprised to learn that the whole of the bush within the radius fence is doomed to destruction unless the goats that now frequent it in great numbers can be extirpated. The Minister rightly described this as a very serious matter, but unfortunately it is a danger that threatens many other beautiful scenic resorts as well. Many of the most beautiful surviving vestiges of magnificent native forests are threatened with absolute extinction through the ravages of goats and deer. The latter have done incalculable damage. No consideration for deer-stalkers or acclimatisation societies should deter the authorities from taking effective steps to protect the bush against these enemies.
