BACK FROM SAMOA.
DIOMEDE'S CRUISE. SIXTY MARINES LEFT BEHIND. Back from Samoa after a six weeks' cruise, H.Mjs. Diomede dropped anchor in Auckland harbour about nine o'clock thi-s morning and berthed at the Calliope dockyard two hours later. "All was quite well when we were in Samoa, and we got away without any bother," said an officer of the vessel this morning.
The Diomede left Napier on February 18 and, steaming at 19 knots, reached Samoa four and a-half days later. Coming home a speed of about 14 knots was maintained.
From the Diomede and the Dunedin, sixty marines, under Oommander Godfrey, R.N., were left behind at Apia and it is not known when they will be relieved.
Cruising round the islands, the Diomede went in turn to Apia, Pago Pago and later to Suva, Fiji. At no time was there any serious demonstration by the natives. Occasicnally there were semiofficial functions, and at each port the officers and men were entertained.
