FLARE OF JEALOUSY.
BOOTLEGGER'S DUEL. A bartender, liis common law wife, and a bootlegger met at 4 a.m. in a Hat at 512 Diversev Parkway, Chicago. There was a flare of jealousy on the part of the two men and a pistol was drawn and fired. Ihe police subsequently were searching for the bootlegger, Thomas Rogers, of 3618 Lake Park Avenue. The bartender,. .Lelaiid Brian, 27 years old, was kiled in the shooting, and the woman, Mrs. Irene Ford, 26 years old, was possibly fatallv wounded. Fred Bosma. lessee o£ the flat, told the police how it happened. "Brian worked in a cafe at 930, ilson Avenue,*' he said. "He and Irene lived in a flat on the second floor at my address. There was a party in cmr flat and Irene came to it. The liquor ran out and I telephoned to Kogers to bring some more. He came with a bottle and was paid for it. But he decided to stay, although he wasn't invited. He sat down beside Irene, who was in negligee. That s where they were when Brian arrived. 'Who is that guv,' he asked, pointing to Rogers. At this, Bosma continued. "Rogers sprang to his feet and drew his pistol shouting that he would kill the other man. The girl stepped between them and was thrust aside. Then two shots were fred Brian, struck near the heart, died at L olumbus Memorial Hospital. Mrs. rord, with a wound in the abdomen, was said to be in a critical condition. In a brief period of consciousness she said that she was a widow, that her husband had been killed in the world war, and that she formerly lived in St. Tau (Minn.).
