WAIHI SCHOOL OF MINES.
PROGRESS RECORDED. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, Friday. The annna] meeting of the Wailii School of Mines was held last evening. The report showed that in the December examinations 32 pupils gained first-class certificates, 10 second-class, and 11 thirdclass. The total, 53, compared favourably with totals of 30, 44, and 51 in the three previous years. The average percentage of marks was 05. The attendance at the combined schools (Waihi and Waikino) showed an increase of 42 and 75 respectively. Laboratory work and sample assaying, etc., were proving of great assistance to prospectors and the mining industry generally. Reference was made to the death of Mr. P. G. Morgan, director of geological survey, and the first director of the school. Two pupils, Arthur Ryall and Ivan Thomas, gained 100 pef" cent passes in junior mathematics. The financial statement showed a credit of £214 5/9. Prizes and certificates were presented as follow:—Chemistry, N. Haszard; quantitative analysis, J. G. Banks; mining subjects, R. J. Rogers; fire assaying, H. J. Rollinson; electrical engineering, J. G. Banks; mathematics, A. Ryall and I. Thomas. The following officers were elected:— Patrons, Messrs. A. M. Samuel, T. Rhodes and C. McMillan, M.P.'s; presi- | dent, Mr. W. H. Johnston; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. M. F. Haszard and J. Gilmour; committee, Messrs. W. Morrison, W. L. Dutton, J. G. Cornes, T. Watters, C. Kingsford and W. Goldsworthy; student representatives on council, E. Scoble and W. Selling; auditor, Mr. W. Wallnutt; Waikino representative, Mr. M. Wynne; borough council representatives, Messrs. S. Walmsley and H. Dale.
