Whakama, who ricked a stifle a fewweeks back, has returned to the track at To Rapa. The two-year-old filly by Day Comet from (Hideaway moves well in her work and should develop into a useful sort.

Modern, a recent winner over hurdles, accounted for the High-weight Handicap at Masterton yesterday. Modern is a gjx-year-old mare by King Soult from Velour, trained by A. Goodman at Trentham.

Greenstone, who led the field home in the Southland Steeplechase on Thursday, is an aged gelding by Pallas. Last season he raced with moderate success in minor steeplechase events at several of the southern fixtures.

Eager Rose, the half-sister to Town Guard, has been sprinting in improved style during- the last few weeks. She has not been in work a great while, but providing she does well in the meantime may be piven her first race at the Avondale meeting next month.

The Waikato-trained Romford, who recently showed a return to form at the Ohinemuri meeting, is engaged in several events to be decided at the Avondale meeting next month. Romford is an improving sort that may be quite capable of extending his winning record before the current season expires.

Justify, who has been entered for two-year-old events at the Auckland and Avondale autumn meetings, has been putting plenty of dash into his track work at El'lerslie. The halfbrother to Assurance, who has furnished into a solid looking youngster, showed plenty of pace when sprinted during the week.

Flying Hero, who won his first race at the Wairarapa summer meeting, was iuccessftil on the same course again yesterday, when he accounted for the juvenile Handicap. This promising two-year-old colt, who is by Flying King from Sainian Flirt, belongs to Mr. A. McDonald, of Masterton, and is trained by R. S. Bagby, at Opaki.

King Quin, who figures among the nominations for the Avondalo Jockey Club's autumn meeting, was a useful performer around the Auckland province a few seasons ago. This gelding was taken down to the West Coast last season, where he was successful in winning several races. However, he is getting on in years, and will find it hard to keep pace with the younger horses that will now be racing against him.

Booster registered his fifth win for the season when he captured the President's Handicap at the Southland meeting on Thursday. The Solferino gelding is a great sprinter and last season as a five-year-old he accounted for six races and was placcd on ten other occasions. Booster claims an engagement in the Oreat Easter Handicap, to l)e decided at Riccarton on April 9, and judging by his recent form, he is likely to take a prominent part in the settlement of that event.

The Te Papa trainer (M. J. Carroll) will have four of Lord Quex's descendant* in his stable next season. In addition to Paganclli and the rising two-year-old gelding by Lord Quex — Balvette (whom this trainer paid 225 guineas for on behalf of a client at the last sales at Trentham) there will be fillies by Lord Quex —Blended and Lord Quex —Steinhill. The two latter w ere handled for the first time last week and if looks count for anything they will not disgrace their breeding.

Rawhetn, who Is now Included among the regular workers at Ellerslie, is attached to J. Williamson's stable. The Day Comet—Miss Winsome gelding has been racing in Australia for several seasons and won some pood races across the water. His most important victories were in the City Handicap of one mile five furlongs, which he won at the A.J.C. autumn meeting 12 months ago, and the Waverley Handicap of one mile and three-quarters, which event he also captured at Kandwick in the 1920 season.

• That good performer Footfall, has been responsible for some excellent Work on the training track at Riccarton during the present month, and appears to be getting back to his best form again. Footfall is engaged in the Great Autumn Handicap with 9.1, which is 41b less than the weight he carried into second place behind Piuthair in the same event last season. Providing the son of Autumnus and Warstep trains on as he is now doing, he should again prominently in the big twelve-fur-™ng race at Kiccarton next month.

Trainer Jefferd has booked accommodation for two horses at E. J. Rae's stable at Green Lane. T. Campbell, of Hawke s Bay, has arso secured a box at the s_me stable. Lord Bruce, who is now getting on in years, is in work again at Ellerslie. He has not had a race for some considerable time, but may ba tried out over hurdles later in the season. Since resuming work at Ellerslie under R. Conway's charge Rahepoto is rounding uj» nicely and has been doing a fair amount of useful pacc work. The Maniapoto gelding should be capable of extending his earnings during the lumping season. r The Easter Handicap candidate, Bright Glow, arrived at Eilerslie this morning, via the Rarawa from New Plymouth, in charge of trainer J. Fryer, who is quartered at W. Mobberley's stable, Ellerslie. Other trainers to arrive on Tuesday next are: A. Cox, with three; F. Tilley, three; M. .7. Carroll, three; G. Reid, two, and R. Symes, three. These trainers will also be quartered at W. Mobberley's stable. Day Guard, who has not been racing lately, is to return to duty in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. * In view of the coming race, Day Guard is having his preparation carricd out at Nparuawahia. Twelve months back Day Guard finished third in the big mile at Ellerslie and with only the minimum impost opposite his name for the race on Saturday week he may have to be reckoned with again.

Aussie is the most notable defection from the Easter Handica, It is just possible that the ailment that came against him a few . c:ks ago is the real cause of his withdrawal, as the Te Awamutu-trained gelding had to be eased up in his work in consequence. However, Aussie has an engagement in the Huia Handicap on the second day of the Auckland meeting and it is possible that this good horse will be racing at the meeting.
