WAIRERI ROADS.
INSPECTED BY HON. A. D. McLEOD. (By Telfsraph — Own Correspondent.) MORRINSVILLE, this day.
While travelling from Tauranga to Frankton the Minister of Lands. Hon. A. D. MeLeod, inspected the Waireri Soldier Settlement, particularly with respect to the unmetalled portion of the main highway, and in connection with which the Piako County Council and the settlers have bfUl in communication with the Government.
The Minister was met by two of the settlers, Messrs. McGill and Carter, who explained the position. They said that the Main Highways Board was giving a £700 subsidy, £ for £, but the difficulty was in raising the other £700. The County Council was not willing to raise a loan for the amount. It was stated that the council's latest proposal was that the Government should find a further £350 and the council £350, but as a main highway was involved there would be some difficulty in giving effect to this.
The Minister informed the settlers that he had already discussed the matter very fully with the Minister of Public Works, and now that he had seen the position for himself he would go further into it on his return to Wellington.
