ARRESTED ON MARAMA.

RETURNING TO CHINA. YOUNG CHINESE WHO STAYED TOO LONG. Just before the Marama was due to sail for Sydney yesterday afternoon, Wing Fong, a young Chinese was arrested by the police on a charg® of remaining in the Dominion beyond the time allowed by a temporary permit. On Fong's behalf, Mr. W. Schramm pleaded guilty. The Collector of Customs, Mr. W. J. Penn, said that accused had his six months' permit extended several times by the Minister, and was given until September 16 of last year to leave. He did not do so, even when warned, and a warrant had to be issued for his arrest. Fong was a hard man to trace, although a constable uiice interviewed him without knowing that he was the man he was seeking. Fong's ident : ty was discovered as he was about to leave on the Marama yesterday. Counsel said that this was not a caw where a Chinese had deliberately tried to evade the law. He had been given extensions because he did net sufficient money to enable him to rem.-;, to China. Arrangements were made for him to return, but these took some time, and it was only recently that his passage money was sent him. He was on his way to Sydney by the Marama yesterday to connect with a steamer leaving there for China. Now be would have to wait another month before he could get a steamer to take him from Sydney to China. Mr. Schramm suggested that a nominal fine would r.ieet the case. Fong was fined fo, or one month's im prisonment.
