THE CRICKET TEST.
AUSTRALIA BATTING.
FIRST WICKET FALLS FOR 184.
PONSFORD AND WOODFULL OPENING PAIR
Watched by a crowd, which an hour before lunch gave promise of a record, the First Test match between Australia and New Zealand was started at Eden Park this morning.
Tk® match was opened on a beautiful fast wicket, which had hardened up under a westerly breeze. The weather was dull, but fine.
Australia won the toss, and had no hesitation in going in to bat on a beautiful wicket. Ponsford and Woodfull, Victoria's famous opening pair, began carefully, but when they had got stock of the bowling, scored much more freely, and by lunch time they had 120 runs. The partnership was broken at 184, when Ponsford was caught by Lowry, off Finlayson.
