Trial On Serious Criminal

Charge.

WIDELY CONDEMNED.

SYDNEY, March 23.

There was a sequel to-day to the alleged assault upon a married woman in Darlinghurst on March 6. The woman was walking home on the evening in question when she was seized by two men and dragged to an adjacent block of flats. There, she alleged, she was assaulted by seven men. When she was allowed to depart she informed the police, who arrested five men named Herbert Wilson, Frederick Payne, Phillip Jeffs, Ernest Wilson and Leslie Heath and charged them with committing the outrage.

Accused, were all brought before a magistrate in the Police Court to-day and were committed for trial on capital charges. The hearing was in camera.

The action of the magistrate in excluding the Press is widely condemned. Many leading barristers express the opinion that he made a serious mistake in conducting such a case behind closed doors. 3
