EAST COAST RAILWAY.
PROPOSED NEW TIME-TABLE.
COMPETITION WITH MOTORS.
SUGGESTED. CONNECTION.
(By Telegraph—Special to "Star."*)
TANEATUA, this day,
A special meeting of the Taneatua Chamber of Commerce was held last evening to consider the proposed new railway time-table. Mr. C. A. Gooch was in the chair. Residents are desirous to put all freight possible through by rail and it was considered that the proposed time-table does not meet the requirements of the district and does not fall in with the . desired one-dav service from Gisborne to Auckland. The proposed time from Taneatua to Auckland amounts to seventeen hours, while the present motor service via Rotorua does the journey in 10£ hours. The Chamber sees no reason why a popular time-table embracing the GisborneMotuhora railway, with motor connection between Motuhora and Taneatua, could not be adopted and feels that until such is done the railway will be unsatisfactory to the East Coast generally, and will have no chance of competing with the present motor services. It was resolved to communicate with the Under-Secretary of Railways on the subject and also with the Chambers of Commerce east of Tauranga to Gisborne, asking their co-operation.
