DOCKING THE WHALER.
HARBOUR BOARD'S
DIFFICULTY.
LARGE EXPENDITURE INVOLVED.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
DUXEDIX, this day.
The Otago Harbour Board has not yet | finally decided whether the lengthening of the Port Chalmers dock to receive the C. A. Larsen is to be a prelude to a permanent lengthening that would enable even bigger vessels to enter. Indications, however, point to permanent lengthening. To do what is required for this whaler's accommodation involves an expenditure of £1000, or a little more, but that work is only of a temporary nature. If, when the Larsen comes out, the board resolves to put back things as they were, an expenditure of about£4ooo will have to be faced. The cost of lengthening the dock by 30ft, instead of by a shorter distance to serve for the Larsen, is estimated at £10,000 or thereabouts. It would therefore appear on this showing that an expenditure of £5000 is inevitable, and that for another £5000 the board would get the dock extended practically to the street line and capable of taking in a much larger vessel than this whaler.
