The Prince ,of Wales, for the first time in his capacity as Master of the Merchant Navy, attended the Master Mariner Company's dinner. He was loudly cheered when he drank from a loving cup before it was passed round among the company. The Prince thanked fellow-country-men In all parts of the world for their messages of congratulation upon his appointment. to the Mastership. The importance of the appointment was not realised by h'm until he studied the statistics, which showed there were 30,000 craft, from liners to barges, employing 250,000 men, registered in the Empire. addition there were 20.000 fishing boats manned by 65,000 British sailors.

His Royal Highness paid a tribute to the master mariners for their services in the Great War. He said he hoped his Mastership would concide with a revival of prosperity in the shipping industry.
