PAPATOETOE WATER.
SUPPLY FOR NEXT SUMMER.
UXDEMBOUHD STREAM TAPPED.
CRYSTAL-CLEAR FLOW.
Investigations for a suitable source for a water supply for Papatoetoe are reported to be nearing completion. At the Papatoetoe Town Board meeting this week the chairman, Mr. Arthur Hall, said that a flow of about 8000 gallons an hour had been obtained, and it was anticipated that the shaft would be completed this week.
Regarding the expenditure, Mr. Hall said that, for the engineering work and the tests, the total amount involved was less than £150, and the water available was of high quality, soft, crystal-clear and pure. The underground stream tapped had its. outfall on the shores of the Manukau, and was being tested at a point in the vicinity of McLaughlin's Mountain, about half-a-mile from the foreshore. The locality was rocky and unsettled; the solirce of supply was within three miles of Papatoetoe, and the intervening country was practically level.
On the basis of a consumption of about 40 gallons, it was estimated that Papatoetoe would require between 60,000 and 80,000 gallons daily for the town area, and the flow at McLaughlin's offered a <?ood margin. Mr. Hall said that steps had been taken to prepare a reticulation scheme, and this would be completed by the engineers within a short time. The next move would be to obtain the sanction of the Local Bodies Loans' Board to the taking of a poll. It was hoped to submit proposals to the ratepayers early in the winter and to complete the reticulation in time to supply the district next summer. With the exception of the least developed streets the major portion of the area would be dealt with in one scheme.
