SWIMMING BATHS PROPOSED.
!By Telegraph.—Special to "Star."") THAMES, this day. The Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister of Education, visited Thames yesterday. In the morning he inspected the primary schools, being accompanied by Mayor, Mr. W. Bongard, and by* Mr. J. Hodge, the chairman, and members of the School Committee. The expressed delight at the healthy, neat and clean appearance of the children
In the afternoon Mr. Wright visited the High School, and was received by Dr. J. B. Liggins and members of the Board of Governors. He was impressed by the school's appointments. The Board of Governors interviewed the Minister with reference to the proposed swiming baths on the board's property, and stressed the need for the baths, as the public baths had been closed. The Department was not bein** fuu *° ve financial assistance, as the board's finances were sound, and it could guarantee its ability to meet the repayment of the loan without Government assistance. The board only asked for authority to consolidate the present loan with a further loan of £3000, to pro\ide for the baths and for fencing the ground.
The board also pointed out the disability of country scholars in obtaining positions in the Public Service, and mentioned the case of a Thames boy who passed fifth in the examination Kst for the whole Dominion, bat had to **** six months before a post was him, vvhile others lower dow», ttutuug in the cities, were obtaining . - The Minister promised to go into the matter.
